I was halfway into my 4-hour mountain run in Alaska’s Chugach Range as I crested the next ridge on my route. Design & Construction

The Raide LF 2L is a high-capacity running belt that combines the functionality of a vest with the lower profile of a belt. It can carry as much as some vests, but avoids bouncing or sagging when fully loaded.

The LF 2L is constructed from 70-denier stretch-woven 78% nylon, 16% Lycra, 6% UHMWPE ripstop fabric. Not only is this material highly elastic, but it is also incredibly durable and long-lasting. It shows no signs of wearing or stretching out after nearly 100 miles of testing.

To achieve its no-bounce performance, the LF 2L incorporates an internal strap system. This puts tension across the back and sides while securing to the Velcro tabs in the front. The LF 2L is also built with a 3mm-thick foam back. It makes the belt more comfortable, adds some structure, and also acts as insulation (so your body heat won’t warm up your bottle).

The LF 2L weighs just 5.5 ounces. Compared to the vests and packs on GearJunkie’s guide to the Best Running Vests and Packs, it would have the second-lowest volume but would be the lightest by far.

Features

The LF 2L is loaded with thoughtful features and design quirks. With seven total pockets and 2 L of storage, it has a generous volume for storing on-trail necessities. I could fit everything I needed for multiple-hour runs easily into this belt.

One of the most unique features is the LF 2L’s secure tool carry system. This is the only belt on the market that advertises an ice axe carry option. The 2.5mm elastic cord is easily cinched down with a cord lock. An additional snap closure secures an ice axe horizontally across the back. This also serves as storage for collapsible trekking poles, eliminating the need to carry them in hand at all times.

The included 650mL flask even has its own innovative flair. While most running flasks are 500mL, Raide increased the volume of its flask to 650mL to fit more securely in the belt. That also provides more hydration capacity. There’s even a locking cap to prevent spilling when pressure is applied to the nozzle while in the belt.

Finally, 3mm thick rigid foam provides structure and rigidity, giving the belt support when fully loaded. This foam has the added benefit of insulating the bottle from your body heat. Four flexible vertical stays provide additional support vertically.

In the Field

I tested the Raide LF 2L on the trails and in the mountains surrounding my home in Anchorage, Alaska. My first testing run involved multiple hours off-trail in the Chugach Mountains. I loaded it up with everything I needed for multiple hours of movement. I brought bars, warm layers, and a headlamp for running in the dark.

The LF 2L was tested over the course of nearly 100 miles on runs between 4 and 5 hours in length. From steep mountain adventures to outings on my local trails, the LF 2L was tested in a variety of conditions and settings.

During those testing runs, I experimented with different aspects of the belt. I compared running with the adjustable straps loose versus tight, as well as using the belt under different loads. This ranged from nearly empty to bursting at the seams with weight and bulk.

I intentionally overloaded the belt to find its limits for mitigating bounce, even when carrying unreasonably dense loads. I also tested this belt running at different intensities to see how different movements affect its performance.

What I Loved

Upon first holding the Raide LF 2L, it was immediately evident that this is a high-quality piece of outdoor equipment. The ripstop material is thick and durable, and the belt itself has a lot of stretch.

After multiple months of testing, I can confidently say that the LF 2L is built to last. I’ve repeatedly stuffed its many pockets to the gills and pushed the stretch fabric to the limit. It always rebounded without showing any signs of stretching out. It is also the most feature-packed and versatile belt of any I’ve ever used.

After nearly 100 miles, it has replaced my vest for everything but the biggest adventures. Its variety of pockets provides ample storage for the necessary fuel and equipment required for runs up to 4 or 5 hours in length without resupply. It has an excellent, no-bounce carry system even while heavily loaded, making it a go-to for carrying lots of gear but without being encumbered by a vest.

Room for Improvement

To me, the biggest detractor for this running belt is the price point. At $150, it is by far the most expensive running belt I’ve come across. It’s the same price (or more expensive) as much larger vests and packs on GearJunkie’s guide to the Best Running Vests and Packs.

In warmer temperatures, I also found the belt to be thick and warm, causing more sweat than anticipated. Compared to other belts on the market, the thick and durable fabric is significantly warmer than smaller belts that are made entirely of mesh. While it’s still more breathable than wearing a running vest, I did notice some increased sweat buildup around the waist and lower back while running in the LF 2L on warmer days.

Raide Research LF 2L Running Belt: Conclusion

The Raide Research LF 2L is a high-capacity running belt designed for moving fast in the mountains. Its volume and bounce-free design make it an extremely capable piece of gear for most daily runs. However, its high price makes it less accessible as a casual option or for those on a budget.

For runners looking for a belt to simply throw a cellphone and some snacks in for your neighborhood jog, this might be overkill. However, if you’re looking for a technical and durable piece of equipment for short runs, day trips, and even alpine strike missions, the price point is well worth it. This is an extremely well-made and thoughtfully designed piece of running gear.

During my inaugural run with the LF 2L, I carried gloves, a buff, a long-sleeve shirt, a wind jacket, a headlamp, multiple bars, and my cellphone, all while still having room for more. Since then, this purpose-built belt has replaced my running vest as my daily driver for running in the Anchorage area.

A handful of items live in my backcountry ski pack all season, regardless of where I’m going or how long I ski. The list includes a waterproof and windproof shell, Voile ski straps, an avi shovel and probe, a pair of glacier goggles, a bar of skin wax, a hand tool, and, as of last spring, I added the Arc’teryx Atom Hoody as an emergency layer.

This lightweight insulated jacket is perfect for active outdoor pursuits such as backcountry skiing. This fall, I also used it for hiking, traveling, and wearing around town. And, with a waterproof shell over it, there wasn’t much weather I encountered in Colorado that required a beefier midlayer.

In 2025, Arc’teryx updated the Atom with FC0-DWR (fluorocarbon-free durable water repellent) finish. I tested the new Atom to see how the upgraded jacket would fare in Colorado’s spring and fall weather. Now, heading into winter, I’m more than confident that it will continue to keep me warm in even colder conditions.

In short: The Arc’teryx Atom Hoody ($300) is a technical midlayer for midlevel output activities. It’s thermo-mapped with Coreloft synthetic insulation and has full-length stretch fleece side panels for greater breathability and ease of movement. The lining is made of recycled nylon ripstop, and the face fabric is treated with PFAS-free FC0-DWR for light water resistance. For active pursuits in cold weather, this is a great option.

Arc’teryx Atom Hoody Review

Arc’teryx designed this jacket for mid-output outdoor pursuits. It can easily transition to be worn out casually around town, but it was designed for alpine adventures and active use.

There’s a reason this jacket is ranked as GearJunkie’s Best Overall Insulated Jacket in our guide to the Best Synthetic Insulated Jackets. It’s easy to move in, breathable, the insulation is strategically mapped, and it’s light and pretty packable.

For most of my late spring and fall adventures, it was almost too warm when I was doing anything high-output — skinning or hiking up steep slopes, or going for brisk jogs in the early morning, for example. However, for mid- and lower-output activities, it was perfect. And if the sky ever opened up and temperatures really dropped, I would have been very grateful to have this jacket in my pack.

Fit & Layout

The Atom Hoody is fitted and has a trim look. However, it’s not restrictive, allowing for easy movement. You can still wear a layer underneath it if it’s really frigid out, and it still fits well under a shell.

Other GearJunkie testers found that the Atom fits a bit on the small side (although I didn’t experience that problem). Since it’s a fitted garment, I’d recommend trying the jacket on before making your purchase.

Arc’teryx used a minimalist design for the Atom. There are only three pockets (two hip pockets on the outside, and one inner chest pocket). There is an elastic cinch cord around the hem, and the hood is helmet compatible with its own cinch. The cuffs have an elastic closure that’s comfortable on the wrists and tucks easily into a glove.

Materials

The face fabric of the Atom is wind-resistant Tyono ripstop that is snag-resistant, abrasion-resistant, and doesn’t pill, according to Arc’teryx. It feels light and soft to the touch and is treated with PFAS-free FC0-DWR for light water resistance. Note, though, that this jacket is not waterproof. While the synthetic insulation will maintain your body heat if it gets wet, the Atom won’t actively repel water.

Recycled Coreloft synthetic insulation traps heat close to the body well. It’s been strategically placed throughout this layer to help prevent overheating. The side panels are also strategically made with stretchy fleece to enhance range and freedom of movement, as well as breathability.

The jacket’s soft ripstop face material is also recycled.

Weight & Packability

Of the jackets we tested for our guide to the Best Synthetic Insulated Jackets, the Arc’teryx Atom Insulated Hoody falls in the middle in terms of weight. At just 12.5 ounces, it’s not the lightest on the list, but it’s still a competitive option.

I barely noticed the weight of this jacket in my ski or hiking packs, or when I was wearing it. For any cold outdoor pursuit where weight is an issue, this is a solid option.

The Atom packs down well and easily fits into a pack. It isn’t as compressible as some traditional down jackets, or even other lightweight synthetic ones. As other testers noted, it does not come with its own stuff sack. But it won’t hog up too much space when you stuff it into a pack.

Arc’teryx Atom Insulated Hoody: In the Field

I wore this jacket throughout the spring on hikes around Glenwood Springs and Leadville, Colo. I wore it out on cold fall morning dog walks, and when I was camping, making coffee in brisk early morning air.

Admittedly, I did not get to test this jacket in the dead of winter, and I look forward to seeing how it performs in much colder weather than I have exposed it to so far. I’ll update this review with any further impressions from that testing.

The most notable factor about this jacket, in my opinion, is its breathability. When I was hiking and working up a sweat, I never felt clammy; I could still soak through my baselayer. But the Tyono ripstop face material, synthetic insulation, and ripstop lining worked well together to respire and manage moisture.

Warmth-wise, I was never disappointed in this jacket. In fact, it was too much for many of the days that I took it out with me. This is a very warm piece. Under a shell, I wouldn’t hesitate to venture out into the coldest weather I encounter in Colorado. For those bitterly cold days, you’d be just fine with the Atom and a baselayer under your shell.

Packability and weight-wise, I never had issues stuffing the Atom into full packs. The weight is negligible, and while it’s not the most packable jacket out there, I could almost always make it fit where I needed it to.

It’s also a great travel garment. It’s just as at home outdoors as it is in town, at an airport, or on a train. For ski trips, climbing trips, hiking trips, or any other adventure where you need a jacket that can transition seamlessly from trail to town, the Atom is a top pick.

Who Is It For?

Skiers, climbers, hikers, and alpine adventurers will love the Atom Insulated Hoody. It’s a versatile piece that packs a lot of heat into a lightweight package. It breathes well and offers a great range of movement, making it a prime layer for active pursuits in cold environments.

It might be overkill if you just need a puffy jacket for walking your dog, or going out to dinner — but if you also use it for outdoor activities, it has double the value because it swings both ways.

I’m excited to test this jacket in colder weather this winter, in environments and conditions that are probably better suited for it. So far, it has been an awesome insulated companion for hiking and wearing around in spring and fall. This winter, it will hold its place in my backcountry ski pack with all the other gear that never leaves it.

Getting an opportunity at a good deer requires a lot of time in the woods. Sometimes it’s not about how far you can go, but how long you can stay in the tree. It doesn’t matter how light your treestand or saddle is; if it’s not comfortable, you’ll dream up every reason to call it quits early.

I’ve had the privilege of testing a ton of saddles. Most of them are comfortable, but the Latitude Outdoors Method 3 tops them all in that regard. No, it’s not the lightest saddle out there, but it’s definitely the most comfortable. If that comfort keeps you on stand longer, then I’d say it earns every ounce of its weight.

In short: The Latitude Method 3 offers excellent adjustability and comfort for long rut sits in the tree, with secure straps and steady panel control. It’s not the most breathable option, but the comfort tradeoff pays off when you need to stay put.

Testing the Latitude Method 3

I’ve put the Latitude Method 3 through the rigors of the deer woods this season, including a few all-day rut sits on an out-of-state hunting trip. I immediately added two Operator pouches to the saddle (one regular and one XL), an upgrade worth every penny. While hunting, I noted how the saddle transported to and from sits, if there were any hotspots or pressure points, and how it handled after long hours in the tree.

A lot of hunting saddles tend to loosen in the leg straps while you hike into a spot. I really appreciated how the Method 3 stayed snug, so I didn’t have to stop and keep adjusting them.

The same goes for the rope belt. I’ve been skeptical about Latitude’s rope belt in the past, but after using the Method 3 extensively, I’m a fan. It adjusts quickly and stays snug, and I didn’t have to worry about it falling down, even with fully loaded Operator pouches.

The drawstrings for the panel adjustments also stayed in place and helped keep both panels together, along with the robust magnets. I never felt like the saddle would come apart on the walk in or hanging in the tree.

The drawstrings also double as stick holders. The Method 3 only has a single row of MOLLE loops, so the built-in holders are a fantastic touch and a great representation of this saddle’s economical design.

Serious Stability

Because there’s so much adjustability in this saddle, you have to be really stubborn to sit in a position that creates any hip pinch. The adjustable bridge and two-panel design give you a ton of setup possibilities in the tree.

During a couple of dark-to-dark sits, I ran through various panel positions, which made it easy to stay comfortable all day on stand. One of the best things about the strong magnetic connection is that you have the ability to run this saddle as a true single or double panel.

For hunters considering Method 3, I would highly suggest adding a few operator pouches. These silent, roomy pouches have plenty of room to hold your lineman’s rope, tether, bow hanger, tow rope, headlamp, and whatever else you need to quickly and conveniently access. That extra room in the pouches means you don’t have to worry about taking a pack for quick hang and hunts or when you need to travel light.

What the Latitude Method 3 Does Best

Aside from its reasonable price, the Method 3 is definitely the most comfortable saddle I’ve used. Mesh padding and ample adjustability in the bridge and panel positions allow hunters to tailor this saddle to their specific fit. Whether you’re upgrading your current rig or just getting into saddle hunting, the Method 3 works for new or seasoned saddle hunters.

Where the Latitude Method 3 Can Improve

All the comfort and padding come with a cost. The Method 3 won’t be mistaken for lightweight, but it still shouldn’t be considered heavy. That padding doesn’t promote the best breathability either. During some warm, early-season hunts, I definitely got warm walking into some spots. Luckily, that part of the season doesn’t last long, and the tradeoff means it’ll help keep your can warm when the temps drop.

Latitude’s Method 3 does something most companies claim but fail to do: make actual improvements on its predecessor. Whenever I pack for a fall backpacking or climbing trip, I always go back and forth about whether I should bring one item: a puffy jacket. Carrying one takes up space and adds some (arguably negligible) weight. During shoulder seasons, I often wonder if it’s really worth bothering.

After testing the PAKA Mayu Ultralight jacket, however, my internal debate over packing a puffy might be resolved. The comfort and warmth of the Mayu, plus its ultra-packability, has earned it a regular spot in my pack. 

I wore the Mayu jacket on several climbing, hiking, and camping trips in Kentucky, Illinois, and Missouri in October and November. The temps ranged from the 30s to the 50s.

It’s easy for a jacket to keep you warm while you’re on the move. But I find that the true test of a jacket’s warmth comes when belaying, an extremely stationary activity. With the Mayu, even on cold mornings in shaded crags at Red River Gorge, I stayed comfortable as I belayed for as much as an hour at a time.

In short: The PAKA Mayu Ultralight Jacket ($250) is a versatile, light layer with a comfortable fit and easy packability. It’s great for hiking, climbing, traveling, and general day-to-day use. The insulation is a blend of synthetic fill and naturally sourced alpaca fiber, which is odor-resistant. At just 8.8 ounces, this jacket competes with ultralight insulated jackets from much larger brands. If PAKA adds a hood and tweaks the zippers, the brand could have a five-star jacket on its hands.

PAKA Mayu Ultralight Jacket Review

The insulation of the Mayu eschews the typical down filling of most jackets for PAKA’s signature material, PAKAFILL. The insulation is 50% alpaca fiber, 35% recycled polyester, and 15% polyester. We’ve covered PAKAFILL in GearJunkie’s previous review of the Apu Parka.

The women’s Mayu weighs 8.8 ounces, and the men’s is 9.2 ounces. The natural insulation provides benefits that traditional down and synthetic insulation won’t, and is fully traceable to its source. Available in sizes S to XXL for men and XS to XXL for women, the Mayu also comes in an Ultralight Vest version.

Fit

As a female climber with broad shoulders and a narrower waist, I often struggle with finding jackets that fit well. Often, even when I size up from my normal medium to a large, jackets are still cut too tight in the shoulders and restrict my freedom of movement.

I’m tired of women’s jackets that fit like a second skin, and the Mayu was a great change of pace. I tested a large and had ample room, which made it easy to layer with the Mayu. When it got chilly at night (below 40), I added a light fleece beneath the Mayu and felt quite comfortable.

Before getting on the wall, I did warm-up exercises — pull-ups and stretches — without feeling any constraints from the jacket. While there was extra space in the waist and chest area as a result of me sizing up, it wasn’t overly baggy or billowy. It certainly didn’t interfere with keeping me warm.

Durability

In my attempts to put this jacket through the wringer, I was not careful with it. I scraped against rocks, shoved it in my pack, tossed it on bushes, and at one point, even let my dog use it as a bed. After careful inspection, I noticed no loose threads, holes, or other damage, except in one area.

I managed to break off a zipper pull (more about this below) on one of the side pockets in the first week of wearing this jacket.

Packability & Storage

You can store the Mayu by stuffing it into the internal zippered chest pocket. I appreciated how easy this was. Sometimes, storing packable jackets means fighting to get the zipper closed. The pocket was spacious and plenty large enough to stuff, zip, and go easily. 

When packed up, the jacket measures just 9 x 8 inches. It easily compresses, and I could shove it in the small empty spaces between climbing gear in my bag. It would make for a decent travel/camping pillow if you needed one on the fly.

I loved how large the main external pockets on the Mayu were. While scrambling around looking for climbs at The Red, I wanted to have my hands free, but also wanted to bring along the guidebook.

To my surprise, the hefty tome fit inside the pocket (and it zipped). You can easily fit all your essentials — beanie, gloves, phone, wallet — in these pockets.

Warmth & Weather Protection

Not only is the Mayu wind- and water-resistant, but PAKA claims that alpaca wool naturally stays warmer when wet than traditional down does. I wore the Mayu in drizzling conditions while bouldering, and found that it held up quite well. After about an hour of constant drizzling, I noticed the outside felt quite damp, but I still felt warm and didn’t notice any moisture inside.

One of my favorite climbing areas in Illinois has a stark divide. One side is sunny and warm, while the other never gets a lick of sun. The dark side can be quite chilly and windy. While I belayed in a dark corner, I was glad I had the Mayu with me.

Other Features

Yet another added bonus of alpaca wool, according to PAKA, is that it’s naturally anti-bacterial and odor-resistant. While I didn’t really sweat in the jacket, after a week straight of wear (which involved unzipping it and tossing it in the dirt right before I climbed, as well as sitting around campfires), I would feel comfortable wearing the jacket to an office or event without doing laundry.

As someone with sensitive skin, I’m unable to wear sheep’s wool against my skin. I was concerned I might be similarly sensitive to alpaca fiber. However, the recycled nylon lining provided enough of a barrier that I never found out.

Sustainability

As more and more consumers factor sustainability into their purchasing decisions, brands like PAKA are prioritizing eco-friendly practices. The Mayu is made with recycled nylon and polyester. The alpaca fibers in its PAKAFILL are traceable all the way down to specific farms in the Andes. Like the rest of PAKA’s products, the jacket is Bluesign-certified.

According to PAKA, choosing alpaca wool over down is also a better choice when it comes to animal welfare. This fabric comes from free-roaming alpacas (which need regular shearing to stay healthy), rather than birds that have been killed for their feathers.

PAKA Mayu vs. Competitors

Looking at the Mayu, the immediate competitor that comes to mind is Patagonia’s Nano Puff. I’ve had one of these iconic jackets for years, and feel safe saying that the Mayu can compete with the Nano Puff, and might even have a slight edge. While the Mayu is more expensive ($250 versus $230), it is over 2 ounces lighter than the Nano Puff (8.8 ounces versus 10.9 ounces). 

I also find the fit of Patagonia’s women’s jackets too slim, and I appreciate the roominess of the Mayu. In fact, compared to every other jacket on GearJunkie’s guide to the Best Down Jackets, the Mayu would be tied with the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer ($380) for the lightest jacket on the list.

Drawbacks

While function always trumps aesthetics when it comes to outdoor gear, I do think PAKA could improve the color choices. Both men’s and women’s versions of the Mayu come in only burgundy, black, and fossil (which I tested). 

I thought the fossil color was very blah and underwhelming. Not only is beige a very humdrum color, but it is also light enough to show every speck of dirt. In the future, a broader array of poppier colors could add some fun to the design of the jacket. 

It’s also worth noting that the Mayu doesn’t have a hooded option (yet). While not a dealbreaker, it would be nice if PAKA came out with a hooded Mayu for even more warmth.

Finally, the zippers. The main zipper on the jacket has a large pull tab that’s easy to manipulate, but I didn’t like the zipper pulls on the two side pockets. They’re just two small pieces of cord, joined together with a smooth plastic coating. The small dongle is difficult to grasp with gloved hands, and its plastic coating is slippery. I managed to snap off one of the side pocket zipper pulls within the first few days of having the jacket.

PAKA Mayu Ultralight Jacket: Conclusions

If you’re looking to add a travel-friendly, lightweight layer to your quiver, the Mayu is an excellent choice. The insulation is lightweight, warm, and weather- and odor-resistant. With the exception of the zippers on the pockets, PAKA has created a durable and versatile product.

The brand’s first ultralight insulated jacket can compete with some of the biggest names out there. That’s impressive for a small company.

On top of all of that, the naturally sourced and traceable insulation is eco-friendly and sustainable. The nylon components of this jacket are all also made with recycled materials. PAKA is making high-quality gear that puts the earth first, and there’s a lot to be said for that. The PAKA Mayu’s permanent place in my hiking and climbing pack has been well earned. This lightweight little puffy packs a punch.

It’s not often I seek out trails with puddles and creeks, but that’s what you do when testing out low-cut waterproof hiking shoes. It’s an important part of my search for a hybrid shoe that’s dialed for hikers, and not necessarily for ultra runners.

The Oboz Katabatic is a great example of a boot brand’s take on the hybrid hiking shoe, as opposed to a running brand’s take. The Katabatic prioritizes stability, protection, and cushioning over ultralight weight and minimalism.

This top-tier trail shoe has been popular for a few years. The (non-waterproof) Katabatic LT women’s version is included in GearJunkie’s guide to the Best Hiking Shoes for Women.

Previous waterproof Katabatic versions used Oboz’s proprietary B-Dry for waterproofing. The latest update to this shoe, the Katabatic LT GTX, foregoes B-Dry and uses a GORE-TEX Invisible Fit membrane bonded directly to the shoe’s upper, instead. It’s one of GORE’s latest technologies, and supposedly saves some weight and thickness in the upper.

I was curious how the updated Katabatic would perform on my local trails in Colorado. So, this summer, I got my hands on a pair and started seeking out wet singletrack to splash around on.

In short: The Oboz Katabatic LT Low GTX ($170) hiking shoes are a hiking brand’s take on a hybrid shoe with a trail running feel. However, it doesn’t sacrifice support, protection, or comfort. If you’re on board with that philosophy and prefer a narrower heel, snug midfoot, and arch support, this could easily become your favorite hiking shoe.

Oboz Katabatic LT Low GTX Hiking Shoe Review

I hiked in the Katabatic LT Low GTX shoes for months, ranging from day hikes to a few low-mileage overnight trips in the Rocky Mountains. I wore them in a wide variety of terrain and mostly mild conditions. My first impression was that they felt like a trail running shoe. They were already broken in after my first long hike in them.

I found the Katabatic LT shoes nimble on quick exertions when speed-hiking up loose-rock climbs and technical terrain. There, the shoe’s secure fit, stable sole, rock plate, and toe guards all proved their worth. Unless you’re scrambling frequently, these shoes and tread will inspire a great deal of confidence and support on your hikes.

No, they aren’t as agile as a running shoe, and at the end of a long day-hike, the Katabatic can feel sluggish. But at 1 pound, 4.6 ounces, they’re competitive with most of the shoes on our guide to the Best Hiking Shoes. In fact, they’d be the second lightest on that list. However, compared to those shoes in our guide to the Best Running Shoes, they’d be the heaviest.

That’s the cost of its protective upper and big-chassis platform. The stiffness that helps propel you throughout the day may also convince your legs that these are best for day or overnight hikes.

Overall, these are very comfortable shoes. While traveling, I even wore them around town (with thicker socks) after I’d chafed my heels in some brand new and ill-fitting Vans. 

Waterproofing

GORE-TEX announced its Invisible Fit technology earlier in 2025. Instead of using a waterproof bootie that slides into the shoe like a sock, the Invisible Fit membrane is laminated directly to the shoe’s upper. That makes the fit more akin to a streamlined runner than a traditional GORE-TEX waterproof hiking shoe.

The Katabatic LT GTX was my go-to mountain hiker from a (surprisingly) rainy spring through fall monsoons. My testing of the low-cut shoe’s waterproof performance was conducted in shallow stream crossings, mud puddles, and sections of unmelted snow on the trails. That said, walking through some dewy grasses here and there, the shoes kept my feet dry, too. The waterproofing is top-notch.

Hikers who spend more time in wetter environments or go for longer hikes may enjoy the added support and coverage of the mid-height Katabatic LT GTX shoes. 

Even in the dry heat of summer, I had no issues with sweaty feet when wearing light socks. The GORE-TEX Invisible Fit seems to breathe as well as the brand claims.

Fit

I have duck feet, so shoes with thinner heels and a wide foot box fit me best. The Oboz Katabatic GTX hits that mark. It has a snug heel, slightly tight midfoot, and a toe box that is just roomy enough.

The collar and lacing both help with a secure fit. The heel stayed put on long inclined ascents, which is where some competing hiker shoes give me trouble. One occasional issue I experienced, usually on long descents, was my foot sliding into the forefoot and feeling a bit cramped by the relatively low volume there.

I had a habit of hastily lacing these too tightly, which is easy because the midfoot barely needs help to fit snug. I’ll say that what feels a tad too tight before leaving the house works itself out on the trail.

Once I took the time to loosen the laces all the way down and really pay attention to how I laced them up, I found just the right fit. Just leave a little wiggle room. Which reminds me, the shoe’s padded tongue helps against lace burn and stays in place.

Cushioned & Rigid Soles

Part of the shoe’s cushion and support comes from the O FIT Insoles, which accentuate the deep heel and provide arch support with EVA foam. The insoles also have denser pockets of cushioning under the heel and forefoot for a bit of squish on harder steps — and surely over the course of a hike, which was more subtle. A wicking top layer on the insole seems like a plus, too.

The Katabatic has a healthy amount of energy return, which I wasn’t expecting. They are springy, for sure. Some of that is in the insole, but there’s also some bounce from the outsole. Much of the shoe’s stability comes from the rugged upper and the platform of the outsole. It can feel stiff when compared to running-brand hiking shoes, but it’s still more relaxed than any hiking boot.

Oboz uses its own Trail Tread rubber compound that has some give, which helps with comfort and confident footing on rocky trails (wet or dry). The multi-directional lugs performed well on various dry surfaces and terrain, shedding mud effectively.

However, the tread showed its limits on wet roots and already slick rocks during creek crossings — admittedly setting it up for failure in some cases. Overall, the traction offers confidence on nearly all stable surfaces. Just exercise caution on the really slippery ones.

Durability

These shoes have clocked dozens of miles, most of which were on fairly clear trails. They got a dusty patina and scuffs, but otherwise have avoided any signs of failure in the upper or seams that would compromise the waterproof membrane, much less the shoe itself. I don’t see the construction as a concern.

Oboz Katabatic LT GTX: Who Are They For?

I think the Katabatic LT GTX is a bit of a niche shoe due to its middle-ground appeal, however warranted. I suspect that younger and ultralight hikers may scoff at the weight, whereas older and more traditional hikers may appreciate the stability and surefootedness in a lighter-than-boot package.

Oboz positions these shoes for day hikes and fast and light overnights. I found the cushioning and stability to be more than enough for such missions, though they may feel heavy after long days. I’m sure there are plenty of ultralight packers who would be happy to wear these for a 3- to 5-day backpacking trip.

I’d recommend these to anyone who pared down to a HOKA Speedgoat or Merrell Moab and found they wanted something more substantial and protective on their feet. Similarly, these would serve as a middle ground for anyone who has hesitated to leave traditional hiking boots for running shoes. I’d also recommend it for anyone who has found the fit of other popular hiking shoes to be too roomy in the heel.

The low-top Katabatic LT GTX version makes sense for anyone who regularly hikes in wet environments. For those in drier climates, the waterproof aspect will still protect your feet from spring or fall mud, shallow water crossings, and is breathable enough to wear on warmer hikes in more arid climates.

For over a century, Buck Knives has been part of our heritage. From farmers working their fields, to soldiers fighting on the front lines, and folks like you and me wandering around in the woods, a Buck knife is part of those stories. However, as someone who writes about knives, this is the first time Buck has been part of a story I’ve written.

At the end of October, Buck sent me some knives from its new Range series. What’s significant about these knives is that it’s the first time Buck has used the crossbar lock on its American-made folders. The series is also significant because it represents the 21st century for Buck. When one of the longest-running American knife companies diverts from the norm and adds such a modern feature to its iconic knives, it’s worth paying attention.

From the last week of October to the week before Thanksgiving, I used and abused both a Buck Range Elite and a Range Pro. The differences between the two are in function and did not go unnoticed. I’ll cover those differences as well as my overall experience with these Buck blades. However, when it comes down to brass tacks, you can’t go wrong with either knife.

In short: The Range Series of Knives represents the first time Buck Knives has added a crossbar lock to any of its blades. Both the Elite ($220) and the Pro ($125) have the same size and shape, but use different materials. The Elite has a titanium-scaled grip and uses MagnaCut Steel. The Pro has a nylon grip and uses 154CM steel. Both are great knives for different uses.

Buck Knives Range Series Review

Design & Features

Where the materials between the two knives differ, the size and shape of both the Range Pro and Range Elite are the same. So, this became a real apples-to-apples comparison during the testing period.

Both knives are 7.88 inches in total length and feature a 3.38-inch drop-point blade. Those blades deploy via a thumb stud and lock up securely with Buck’s version of the crossbar lock. Additionally, both knives feature deep-carry pocket clips, though they are not interchangeable.

For a frame and handles, the Pro has stainless steel liners and textured glass-filled nylon scales. These scales help keep the weight of the Pro below 3 ounces and are both gummy and grippy.

On the Elite, the frame is the same, but the scales are made from anodized aluminum. Although the aluminum brings the Elite to just over 3.5 ounces, the difference in build is more rugged.

Overall, the Elite feels and reacts on a heavy-duty use level, where the Pro is more aligned to medium duty, which is where most backpacking folders find themselves these days.

Most notably, there’s the difference in steel. The Elite uses the current knife blade superstar, MagnaCut. The Pro uses 154CM, which, prior to the advent of steels like MagnaCut, was a reigning champ in the EDC and outdoor knife worlds. MagnaCut is a superior steel in all three main areas: toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance (hence, the higher price point for the Elite).

Initial Reaction

Where I was excited to get both full-sized versions of the Range Series, I gravitated toward the Pro once I received and opened both boxes. I am by no means an ounce counter, but the grip and weight of the Pro instantly appealed to me. However, I could appreciate the obvious difference in build and quality with the Elite.

Either way, these Range knives are long and slender, with neither the blade nor the handle overpowering the other. Considering the blade’s size and drop-point shape, these knives are well-suited for cutting, piercing, shaving, and shaping with ease.

With MagnaCut being a superior steel, I’m certain that the Elite will prove to be the workhorse that requires less TLC in the end. Still, the Pro has quite a bit to be proud of. Where it might not be your top choice for a hard day’s work, it meets or exceeds the capabilities of all the other popular hiking and backpacking knives on the market.

In the Field

Out there in the thick of it, both knives certainly held their own. Where the Elite is more stubborn, the Pro proved to be more than capable. That said, while either one of them would be a welcome companion out on a hike, the Elite is the knife I would use for grunt work.

So, I did.

How grunty, you ask? How about breaking down a couch with it? My kids had an old love seat in their loft that I had to cut all of the fabric off of to dispose of properly. All of it was either glued or stapled to the frame — including this dense memory foam that the MagnaCut sailed through beautifully.

In the end, the Elite needed a solid resharpening, but the coating on the handle scales held up, and it functioned like new. As a celebratory award, I burned the frame in a big bonfire.

However, in the end, I still preferred the Pro. I liked carrying it on hikes and at night out in the woods (sleeping in my truck). The Pro punches above its weight class, in my opinion. I used it for both fire and food preparation. It proved to be that quintessential pocket knife we all strive to find when we head into our favorite camping store — virtually or in person.

The Mini Options

Rounding out the Range lineup, Buck also offers the Mini Range Elite ($210) and Mini Range Pro ($115). Like their bigger siblings, the Minis are the same size and shape. They also feature the same material and functions as their larger counterparts. They have a total length of 6.25 inches and feature a 2.63-inch blade.

For my liking, I find the Minis to be too small. However, they feature the same balance as the bigger knives. For someone looking for a small form factor EDC, these might be a better fit.

That being said, if you’re considering picking up the Mini Pro, I would recommend spending the extra $10 to get the full-sized version. I wouldn’t say the same about the Elite, as I believe that someone willing to spend over $200 on a smaller knife really wants that smaller knife.

Buck Knives Range Elite & Pro: In Conclusion

Although this is my first review of a Buck knife, I am no stranger to the brand. Growing up in a family of farmers, Bucks were commonplace over any other brand. However, that was more than 30 years ago, and a lot has changed.

Buck isn’t just about two-hand lock-back knives, and they haven’t been for a while. The Range series of knives represents the most modern, appealing, and effective folding knives in their catalog.

All in all, after 3 weeks of testing and carrying, I would point any one of you in the direction of either one of these knives. If you tell me you’re tending to horses out on the family farm, I’m going to recommend the Elite. If you’re heading for a weekend in the woods, I am going to recommend the Pro.

In the end, the choice is up to you. You can go with the Elite and be happy knowing you’ve got one heck of a knife that you can use and abuse ’til the cows come home. If you end up with the Pro, you’re going to be in a great spot, with $100 left in your wallet for snacks and beers.

Testing Day One: Dry Tortugas

Day one began early in Key West with a long run, 2 to 3 hours each way, to Dry Tortugas National Park. The weather played relatively nice in the beginning with blue skies and calm water.

We explored the old brick walls of Fort Jefferson first, wandering the edges where the Atlantic meets the Gulf. The boat stayed steady through it all. The gyro worked quietly in the background, smoothing every shift of the hull.

Later that afternoon, we anchored near a shallow wreck for a bit of snorkeling. I spent some time in the water alongside a goliath grouper the size of a small car, and while the experience was incredible, it was also dizzying.

The movement of the water certainly picked up. The surge tossed me in every direction, which is totally unfamiliar to me, being a “mountain folk” and all. Back on the boat, the difference was immediate. The motion felt calm again, and for the first time, I realized how much the DG3 had been doing all day. The water had not changed. The technology had.

The ride back to Key West came with short, choppy waves that would normally send bodies swaying and gear sliding. Instead, everything felt contained. Testing Day Two: Open Water and Outages

The second day was the real test. We set out to fish in open water, and the conditions turned into exactly what we needed for a full shakedown. Strong wind, rolling water, and, as luck would have it, constant power problems. The outages had nothing to do with the DG3 itself but created the kind of test no one could plan for.

When the boat lost power, the gyro shut off, and the world immediately tilted. Everyone grabbed for balance. Buckets slid. Rods clattered. Swells threw the deck from side to side.

Each time the power returned, the DG3 spun back up fast. The short startup time saved us from what could have been a long, miserable day. With other gyros, we would have been stuck waiting for half an hour or longer to regain stability.

Instead, within minutes, the deck settled and work resumed. Those quick recoveries turned what might have been chaos into a manageable rhythm.

The difference between the system on and off was sharp. With the DG3 running, you could move freely, tie knots, and keep your footing when big waves hit. When it was off, every step became a battle against gravity. Even those who were not paying attention could tell the moment it came online again.

By the end of the trip, fatigue told the story. Usually, a day in rough water leaves my body aching from hours of keeping myself upright. This time, the usual exhaustion never came. I felt steady, even relaxed, after two full days of unpredictable water. The DG3 did not calm the sea, but it changed how the sea felt underfoot, and that made all the difference.

Dometic DG3 vs. the Competition

The Dometic DG3 competes directly with the Seakeeper 3 and the Quick MC² Quick Gyro 10. All three aim to reduce roll on boats in the 35- to 40-foot range, yet they take different approaches to get there.

The Seakeeper 3 relies on hydraulics and takes roughly 45 to 50 minutes to reach full speed. Once up to speed, it performs well but takes much longer to recover after a shutdown. A full spool-up delay can be frustrating when a power interruption happens offshore.

The Quick MC² Quick Gyro 10 is electric, which simplifies maintenance, but it draws heavier power during startup and weighs more overall. It also has a slightly larger footprint, making installation more difficult on boats with limited machinery space.

The DG3 separates itself through speed, efficiency, and size. Its all-electric precession design means no hydraulic components to maintain. It reaches stabilization in about 16 minutes, spins down in under 20, and draws less power once at speed. It is quieter in operation, easier to service, and fits into tighter spaces than the other two options.

Like all gyros, it still depends on boat power to function, but the DG3’s rapid restart helps it recover faster after an outage. Seakeeper maintains a broader service network, yet Dometic’s simplicity and responsiveness give it the edge in practical use.

Drawbacks

The DG3 solves a long list of problems, yet it brings a few of its own. Cost sits at the top of that list. The unit alone is more than $40,000, and that number climbs once you factor in installation, electrical integration, and any structural reinforcement your boat might need.

This is a serious investment for owners who spend serious time offshore. Anyone looking for a casual comfort upgrade will feel the price long before they feel the stabilization.

The second drawback is weight. At 570 pounds, the DG3 is not small and not light. That weight must sit low and be fully supported, which adds pressure to find the right installation point.

Space on mid-size boats is always a puzzle, and adding something this heavy can change how the boat trims and handles if it is not placed perfectly. It is a manageable drawback, yet it is not one you can ignore.

Both issues matter, but neither changes the fact that the DG3 performs as advertised. The cost limits who will consider it, and the weight demands careful planning. For the right boat and the right owner, the tradeoffs still make sense.

Who’s It For?

The DG3 suits midsize offshore boats that regularly run in open water, where roll control makes the difference between comfort and chaos. Charter captains, serious anglers, dive operators, and anyone who spends long days offshore will find real benefit. I’m thinking strictly for those whose office is on the water and are tired of being tired from just trying to keep themselves upright.

If your boat rarely leaves protected bays, the investment might not make sense. Unless you’re the type of person with a wallet that won’t notice, who doesn’t want your mimosa to topple. For anyone who chases fish on the regular or adventures beyond calm waters routinely, the DG3 earns its keep.

Final Thoughts

The Dometic DG3 is certainly not a simple accessory added lightly. It is a performance tool that changes how a boat behaves

when the weather stops cooperating. After two full days in heavy chop, I can say it reduced fatigue, increased comfort, and kept us productive when we might have otherwise called it early.

It delivers faster startup, lower maintenance, and true usability for midsize boats that need reliable stabilization. The DG3 carries a price tag that starts over $40,000 and moves up quickly, which makes it a serious investment.
