For over a century, Buck Knives has been part of our heritage. From farmers working their fields, to soldiers fighting on the front lines, and folks like you and me wandering around in the woods, a Buck knife is part of those stories. However, as someone who writes about knives, this is the first time Buck has been part of a story I’ve written.

At the end of October, Buck sent me some knives from its new Range series. What’s significant about these knives is that it’s the first time Buck has used the crossbar lock on its American-made folders. The series is also significant because it represents the 21st century for Buck. When one of the longest-running American knife companies diverts from the norm and adds such a modern feature to its iconic knives, it’s worth paying attention.

From the last week of October to the week before Thanksgiving, I used and abused both a Buck Range Elite and a Range Pro. The differences between the two are in function and did not go unnoticed. I’ll cover those differences as well as my overall experience with these Buck blades. However, when it comes down to brass tacks, you can’t go wrong with either knife.

In short: The Range Series of Knives represents the first time Buck Knives has added a crossbar lock to any of its blades. Both the Elite ($220) and the Pro ($125) have the same size and shape, but use different materials. The Elite has a titanium-scaled grip and uses MagnaCut Steel. The Pro has a nylon grip and uses 154CM steel. Both are great knives for different uses.

Buck Knives Range Series Review

Design & Features

Where the materials between the two knives differ, the size and shape of both the Range Pro and Range Elite are the same. So, this became a real apples-to-apples comparison during the testing period.

Both knives are 7.88 inches in total length and feature a 3.38-inch drop-point blade. Those blades deploy via a thumb stud and lock up securely with Buck’s version of the crossbar lock. Additionally, both knives feature deep-carry pocket clips, though they are not interchangeable.

For a frame and handles, the Pro has stainless steel liners and textured glass-filled nylon scales. These scales help keep the weight of the Pro below 3 ounces and are both gummy and grippy.

On the Elite, the frame is the same, but the scales are made from anodized aluminum. Although the aluminum brings the Elite to just over 3.5 ounces, the difference in build is more rugged.

Overall, the Elite feels and reacts on a heavy-duty use level, where the Pro is more aligned to medium duty, which is where most backpacking folders find themselves these days.

Most notably, there’s the difference in steel. The Elite uses the current knife blade superstar, MagnaCut. The Pro uses 154CM, which, prior to the advent of steels like MagnaCut, was a reigning champ in the EDC and outdoor knife worlds. MagnaCut is a superior steel in all three main areas: toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance (hence, the higher price point for the Elite).

Initial Reaction

Where I was excited to get both full-sized versions of the Range Series, I gravitated toward the Pro once I received and opened both boxes. I am by no means an ounce counter, but the grip and weight of the Pro instantly appealed to me. However, I could appreciate the obvious difference in build and quality with the Elite.

Either way, these Range knives are long and slender, with neither the blade nor the handle overpowering the other. Considering the blade’s size and drop-point shape, these knives are well-suited for cutting, piercing, shaving, and shaping with ease.

With MagnaCut being a superior steel, I’m certain that the Elite will prove to be the workhorse that requires less TLC in the end. Still, the Pro has quite a bit to be proud of. Where it might not be your top choice for a hard day’s work, it meets or exceeds the capabilities of all the other popular hiking and backpacking knives on the market.

In the Field

Out there in the thick of it, both knives certainly held their own. Where the Elite is more stubborn, the Pro proved to be more than capable. That said, while either one of them would be a welcome companion out on a hike, the Elite is the knife I would use for grunt work.

So, I did.

How grunty, you ask? How about breaking down a couch with it? My kids had an old love seat in their loft that I had to cut all of the fabric off of to dispose of properly. All of it was either glued or stapled to the frame — including this dense memory foam that the MagnaCut sailed through beautifully.

In the end, the Elite needed a solid resharpening, but the coating on the handle scales held up, and it functioned like new. As a celebratory award, I burned the frame in a big bonfire.

However, in the end, I still preferred the Pro. I liked carrying it on hikes and at night out in the woods (sleeping in my truck). The Pro punches above its weight class, in my opinion. I used it for both fire and food preparation. It proved to be that quintessential pocket knife we all strive to find when we head into our favorite camping store — virtually or in person.

The Mini Options

Rounding out the Range lineup, Buck also offers the Mini Range Elite ($210) and Mini Range Pro ($115). Like their bigger siblings, the Minis are the same size and shape. They also feature the same material and functions as their larger counterparts. They have a total length of 6.25 inches and feature a 2.63-inch blade.

For my liking, I find the Minis to be too small. However, they feature the same balance as the bigger knives. For someone looking for a small form factor EDC, these might be a better fit.

That being said, if you’re considering picking up the Mini Pro, I would recommend spending the extra $10 to get the full-sized version. I wouldn’t say the same about the Elite, as I believe that someone willing to spend over $200 on a smaller knife really wants that smaller knife.

Buck Knives Range Elite & Pro: In Conclusion

Although this is my first review of a Buck knife, I am no stranger to the brand. Growing up in a family of farmers, Bucks were commonplace over any other brand. However, that was more than 30 years ago, and a lot has changed.

Buck isn’t just about two-hand lock-back knives, and they haven’t been for a while. The Range series of knives represents the most modern, appealing, and effective folding knives in their catalog.

All in all, after 3 weeks of testing and carrying, I would point any one of you in the direction of either one of these knives. If you tell me you’re tending to horses out on the family farm, I’m going to recommend the Elite. If you’re heading for a weekend in the woods, I am going to recommend the Pro.

In the end, the choice is up to you. You can go with the Elite and be happy knowing you’ve got one heck of a knife that you can use and abuse ’til the cows come home. If you end up with the Pro, you’re going to be in a great spot, with $100 left in your wallet for snacks and beers.

Back in 1980, Pete Gerber teamed up with knifemaker Blackie Collins to rethink the classic lockback folder. Their goal was simple: build a lighter, more useful everyday knife. The result was the Gerber LST — a synthetic-scaled, lockback pocketknife that helped define modern EDC.

Gerber LST Ultra Review

Design & Features

Aside from being lightweight and durable, the original LST design was to keep it simple. It was a slow-going, two-hand opening and closing knife meant for utility and task work on the go. That still rings true with the LST Ultra, with some changes that improve upon the original to make it more appealing for modern times without veering too far off the path.

Where the blade shape and lock mechanism remain unchanged, the handle has a greater arc toward the butt for increased comfort and blade control. Additionally, where earlier versions of the LST had stippled handle scales, the Ultra uses alternating geometry on the surface of the scales to give the knife a modern look and ultimately increase your grip.

For steel, Gerber adhered to the classics and went with 420HC. Having been around longer than most of us have been alive, 420HC is a high-carbon stainless steel that gives you the best of both worlds. The steel is tough and abrasion-resistant as well as corrosion-resistant. If you recognize the name, this is the same steel that Leatherman has been using in its tools for as long as I can remember.

First Impressions

When I was a teenager, I worked in a camping store in my hometown. We sold a ton of the original LSTs. In fact, it’s the knife I carried when I was breaking down boxes or unwrapping canoes and kayaks. It’s small and efficient. Fast forward to now — the Ultra brings back a lot of great memories.

Two things that stand out as improvements, aside from the addition of a pocket clip, are the reshaping of the handle and the geometric enhancements on the scales themselves. The Ultra is small and tucks into your hand without getting lost. Part of that is due to the pronounced arcing of the handle toward the butt — the other is the grip.

Small knives like this can be real workhorses. They really show up when you need them to. But if it’s swimming around in your palm and you can’t get a good grip on it, you might as well throw it in the trash.

The Ultra sticks in place and allows you to put in demanding work. In an era where there’s a focus on lightweight knives for EDC, they often fail to meet the demands to be considered hardworking. I’m stoked that the Ultra does.

Out in the Field

As I said earlier, this knife forces you to slow down a bit. You’re not going to whip this out and deploy it all in a single movement — and you don’t have to. This is the knife you carve up an apple with. It’s the knife that you shave kindling to make a tinder bundle with. It’s the knife meant to take on tasks you come across during the day.

So, I did all of that with it.

I needed to cut a bunch of shrink wrap off of some load bars and unwrap a few bundles of hardware for my day job as an engineer at Rhino-Rack. The blade on the Ultra swam through the numerous layers without getting hung up. It was small enough that I could be a little more precise so as not to scratch the powder coating off the finished parts.

Additionally, with testing ramping up on knives and other outdoor gadgets, I’m receiving boxes delivered to the house daily. I must have broken down half a dozen boxes just yesterday alone; maybe 30 in total since I started using the Ultra. Aside from some tape gunk on the blade, it’s yet to get dull enough for me to think about rehoning it.

In an unintentional test of the overall corrosion resistance of the steel, I accidentally had the Ultra in my pocket when I did a Polar Plunge into my favorite lake this weekend. It still looks new to me — after leaving it a pair of wet jorts, in a bag, until I got home later that night.

In Conclusion

I’m happy that in designing the LST Ultra, Gerber didn’t stray too far from the original. Where EDC knives have changed quite a bit in form and function in the last few decades, the transition from the LST to the LST Ultra didn’t need to be drastic. Subtle design and material changes are both an homage and a path forward.

I like that the LST Ultra forced me to slow down. It’s hard to take a pause in the modern world, but you’re not flicking this knife out of your pocket. You’re taking it out with one hand and pinching the blade with the other. I think that makes it a shoe-in for kids, as well as being well-adapted for anyone else looking for a smaller task master that rides easily in your pocket.

It’s also nice to see that the knife is still being made here in the United States and only costs $40. Something about that plays into the historical significance of it all, as well as the experience.

Danish design blended with Detroit craftsmanship? Say less, fam!

Deeply rooted in American manufacturing, Shinola Detroit partnered with highly respected knife maker GiantMouse to create a unique gentleman’s folding knife.

The extremely limited Shinola x GiantMouse Perlage Bleeker Knife — just 300 units at launch — looks like a sleek combo of utility and elegance. Pretty enough to be worn with a suit and with materials tough enough to take on hard use, this knife has the appearance of a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

The Brass Perlage is a new take on the GiantMouse Bleecker, a proper gentleman’s folder. The Brass Perlage takes cues from the Bleecker with a trailing-point blade and 4.14-inch handle. The total length is 7.43 inches, which hits a sweet spot for everyday carry. It has a slender build and is modest in weight, adding to its credit when carrying.

The blade steel is M390, a popular choice for high-performance knives that offers top-tier wear resistance and corrosion resistance. It will hold up to almost all daily cutting tasks, and is strong enough to take on heavier use like hunting, fishing, and outdoor adventure pursuits.

The blade carries a large thumb hole for manual deployment from either side and a reversible wire pocket clip. A small section of jimping along the spine of the blade adds grip while cutting. And its liner lock will hold everything safely in place.

Really, the biggest draw of this launch is the striking brass handle. Many knives you see today have carbon fiber, aluminum, Micarta, or titanium handles. Not this bad boy.

This knife has a custom brass handle that dazzles with a perlage pattern finish, inspired by Shinola’s watchmaking heritage. Some may find brass a high-maintenance choice; it will require more consistent cleaning and care. But if you allow it to take on wear, a unique beauty shines through when the handle acquires a patina from your use. You can’t go wrong there.

Who’s It For?

Priced at $275, this knife is made for those who appreciate a unique, premium-level knife and aren’t afraid to drop some coin to add one to their collection.

The trailing-point blade is ideal for slicing, skinning, and precise cutting tasks. It’s popular with many fish- and game-processing knives.

However, this knife is also something of a work of art, and while it could handle game processing, it doesn’t strike me as a blade strictly for that kind of consumer. It would be much better used for EDC cutting tasks and even in the kitchen for meal prep.

The Shinola x GiantMouse Brass Perlage knife is a quality option for classy carry and a unique piece of art that is as capable as it is pretty. Act fast, though — I’d snag the Shinola x GiantMouse Brass Perlage Knife sooner rather than later. I don’t expect those 300 units to last very long.

Multitools always make their presence known in my pocket, reminding me that they are in there. While something like the mid-sized Leatherman Skeletool CX doesn’t take up too much real estate, I am constantly aware of it. That’s fine when I’m working around the yard, but when I’m walking around the city, I want something that completely disappears in my pocket.

Victorinox’s Mini Champ changed my mind about the usefulness of tiny “keychain” tools. Measuring just 2.3 inches long and weighing 1.6 ounces, it’s not going to feather wood for the campfire on your camping trip, nor is it likely to save the day when your car is broken down on the side of the road.

But with 18 claimed functions, at least as Victorinox tells it, I just kept running into situations in ordinary life in which it completely saved the day — from cutting tangled webbing out of a bike’s gearset to prying batteries out of the world’s most uncooperative weather radio. Testing out this gem, which I’ve owned for 4 years, convinced me to begin carrying it daily again.

In short: The Victorinox Mini Champ ($45) is no substitute for the regular-size Swiss Army Knife or multitool you’d take for serious work tasks and adventures into the backcountry, but when it comes to a tool you can slip into a pocket and forget completely that it’s there, the Mini Champ is my favorite of all the keychain multitools on the market.

Victorinox Mini Champ Multitool: Review

Like most multitool companies, Victorinox gets to its tool count of 18 by some funny counting. For example, the included ruler counts the metric and imperial measurements as two separate tools. And the key ring counts, too, which is a bit of a cop-out. It’s par for the course in multitools, however, and I bring it up to rein in expectations about this tiny tool.

All the tools are stainless steel. There are the usual suspects you’d expect on a Swiss Army Knife, including a spear-point main blade about 1.5 inches long and a smaller Wharncliffe precision blade, which is a lot like a sheepsfoot profile. There’s the obligatory (and much appreciated) bottle opener that combines a wire stripper and a Phillips screwdriver.

There’s a pair of simple, spring-action scissors that come in handy often, for when I need to cut something, such as a stray thread on a piece of clothing, and don’t want to risk slicing the whole thing up.

Victorinox must’ve been having a day when it was raiding the company tool chest, looking for tools to cram into the Mini Champ, because it also packs a few very unique choices. Take the orange peeler. It’s a sharply angled hook that, aside from effectively disrobing an orange, constantly comes in handy for snipping zip ties and packaging ties.

Possible Future Price Jump?

Victorinox still makes its Swiss Army Knives in Switzerland, which is good news for the superb fit and finish on its tools. Every tool on the Mini Champ opens and closes cleanly, with no dragging against adjacent tools. The spring locks keep the tools open securely enough that you don’t have to worry about a blade accidentally snapping shut on your fingers during use, as long as you’re paying attention.

Being Swiss-made isn’t such good news when it comes to tariffs, since the U.S. imposed a 39% tariff on goods imported from Switzerland in August 2025. The Mini Champ’s retail price has remained at $60 since Victorinox shipped a bunch ahead of the tariffs, although you can find it on Amazon for $45. Victorinox told The New York Times in September 2025 that it was studying price increases for 2026, though, so if you’ve been eyeballing the Mini Champ, or any other Victorinox, don’t wait too long.

Push It Real Good

There’s one tool in particular that receives hate and praise in equal measure when anyone brings up the Mini Champ. Victorinox calls it the cuticle pusher. Enthusiasts jokingly refer to it as the “coke spoon.” Fans of the, ahem, cuticle pusher (of which I’m one) say that if only Victorinox gave it another name, it wouldn’t have as many detractors who call it a useless tool.

There’s merit in having the blunt cuticle pusher. No, I don’t use it to push back my cuticles, although I gave it a try for this article, and it did work. Most often, I use the cuticle pusher to pry batteries loose. Just yesterday, I used it to help pry open a panel on a cranky printer that was acting up. Using a knife for that would be a good way to cut yourself, damage the device, or both.

I get why Victorinox wouldn’t want to call it the pry bar. Doing so would encourage an awful lot of people to bear down on it, bend it, and then either try to file a warranty claim or trash the tool online. Probably both.

Write This Down

The Mini Champ packs a blue-ink, refillable ballpoint pen that retracts into one of the plastic scales. Few Swiss Army Knives have this tool, and no Leathermans have it. You can easily replace the spent ink cartridge and swap in a new one, which costs just $3. Why Victorinox only sells them with blue ink and not black ink, I have no idea. It seems like black should be a no-brainer.

The pen itself is akin to a cheap Bic. Occasionally, the ballpoint skips or the ink runs dry, and then you have to scribble to get the ink going again. And while there’s surprisingly more ink in the cartridge than one would think on such a tiny tool, I wouldn’t want to write a long letter with it. But it comes in handy frequently for signing documents or the occasional check. I never carry a pen with me, so packing it into a Swiss Army Knife is genius.

Victorinox gives you a plastic toothpick and a pair of tiny tweezers to slot into the opposite scale. You have to choose because you can only fit one. While the Victorinox toothpick works surprisingly well to remove food from teeth, I get an awful lot of splinters, so I go with the tweezers.

They are, frankly, incredibly basic. They look like something one would dig up in an archaeology site on a Civil War battlefield, but they work well enough to snag splinters and, sometimes, after I shave, beard shrapnel.

Those who choose to fork over an extra $10 for the Mini Champ Alox gain handsome aluminum scales in place of the classic red plastic, but lose the retractable pen, tweezers, and toothpick.

Perfectly Scaled

For me, the red plastic scales are on the same level of obligatory, nostalgic perfection as a red Corvette or red Ferrari. Ever since I was a kid fooling around with my friend’s Swiss Army Knife, it’s also been red or nothing for me. Those plastic scales scratch easily, though.

You know what polishes out shallow scratches? Toothpaste. Really, I’ve done it. But you’ll inevitably scratch it up again. Just get used to the idea that this tool will show its wear, subtle as it may be. It’s like an old denim jacket. It’ll show its use.

Victorinox Mini Champ Multitool: Conclusion

The Victorinox Rambler retails for $35 and reduces some of the Mini Champ’s more eclectic tools to the basics: a knife, bottle opener, screwdrivers, file, and scissors. It’s also about 50% thinner, having held up a Rambler against my Mini Champ just last night.

I prefer the Mini Champ because that’s a difference of a mere 0.2 inches, and it’s already unnoticeable in the pocket. Besides, some of the extra tools on the Mini Champ come in handy, such as the pen or the orange peeler for cutting zip ties.

On a long road trip, hustling my Jeep over a trail to a campsite, or working in the yard when there’s a fairly high likelihood of requiring a 3-inch blade or a full-sized pair of pliers, I leave the Mini Champ behind and take a Leatherman or larger Swiss Army Knife. Everywhere else, the Mini Champ has proven to be enough tool for me in the wilds of city life. All 2.3 inches of it.

Vosteed Psyop 299 Review

Design and Features

Designed in a partnership with Tuff Knives, the Psyop 299 is aptly named for its 2.99-inch S35VN drop-point blade. It has Norplex UltreX Micarta handle scales with titanium bolsters. Additionally, it has a top liner lock with an ample button activator.

Designed to slide in between the original Psyop and Mini Psyop, the 299 more resembles the latter but still stands on its own due to its shape and size. The original Psyop has an elongated blade with a secondary choil, which was eliminated on the Mini; however, both knives have smaller primary choils. This was improved on the 299 by elongating the opening and chamfering the bolsters around it.

Additionally, at just over 7 inches in length and carrying a 3-inch blade, the 299 sits in the sweet spot for folding EDC knives. The original Psyop is 8 inches in total length and, though some folks may benefit from the extra inch, I find that the tightened-up geometry and shorter length of the 299 give you more control over the knife. More on that later.

The Psyop Situation

It took a while to get my editor to agree to writing this review. He (understandably) had the impression that the 299 would be nearly the same as the original, which GearJunkie reviewed earlier this year. In the end, he either appreciated my passion — or just wanted to get me to stop talking about the knife — and agreed to this review.

Vosteed is a brand known for its variety. Not only does it offer a wide selection of knife models, but each one also has its own smattering of sub-models.

For someone who knows what they’re looking for, it could be like a trip to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. However, if you’re just a casual browser, this can be a time-consuming and possibly confusing experience.

That being the case, before launching this knife, Vosteed already had 26 different versions of the Psyop. Eight of those are the Mini, and 18 fall under the original Psyop model. The differences lie in handle and blade materials, as well as lock mechanisms.

With the launch of the 299 model, the total number of Psyop iterations stands at 31.

Overall, looking at the lineage, the Mini improves on the original Psyop, and the 299 improves on the Mini. Considering the size and shape of the 299, most people might not even consider the original model when looking for an EDC knife.

First Impressions

From its arcing spine to the juxtaposition of the bolsters against its Micarta scales, the initial fit and feel of this knife were fantastic. The size and shape of the 299 allow you to carry it with ease and use it with a heightened level of control. It’s a full, four-fingered knife that parks your palm on jimping on the butt of the spine, and puts your thumb over the thumb stud on another section of jimping.

These touch points keep your grip in place in wet or dry conditions and under load. You can also really choke up on the blade in a pinch-style hold for skinning, shaving, and shaping.

Pundits might scrutinize the overall length of 7.17 inches relative to its overall weight of 3.75 ounces, but the 299 is intentionally stout. That’s part of its appeal — it allows terrific control. It’s also a knife that, due to these factors, instills confidence.

That said, I am not a fan of S35VN. I don’t have any issues with it, but as it’s so prolific, it doesn’t wow me aside from what I expect from it. I know it’s got great corrosion resistance, edge retention, and abrasion resistance. But I personally would prefer Elmax. To be clear, this is a personal preference, as S35VN has a faithful following and has some attractive characteristics compared to Elmax (easier to sharpen, generally tougher).

Like all of the other Vosteed knives I’ve tested, the 299 is tough. There’s no flex in the handle or wobble in the blade. Additionally, I really like the button-activated top liner lock.

In the Field

I’ve been carrying around this knife since the middle of August, right after it launched. In that time, it’s hiked many miles, crossed a multitude of streams, and has been all over New England. I resharpened it once, just recently.

I did quite a bit with the 299. The knife was ready in my pocket when I needed to open boxes and mail, then eager to slice open packages of freeze-dried food and beef jerky.

It’s the knife I cleaned off in a stream when it got mucky, slicing up a few apples. Thus, it was quite literally used hard and put away wet. I didn’t get to cleaning and drying it off until the following morning.

I found you can beat the heck out of the 299, and then throw it in a river and give it the bird, and it’ll still perform as expected once you retrieve it and clean it up.

Why Not a Perfect 10?

With a score of 9.9, the Psyop 299 is the highest-rated knife I have ever tested for GearJunkie. It utilizes the most sought-after knife materials, it’s the perfect size and shape, and it’s built to last.

The only reason it’s not getting a 10 is because of the lock.

Do I love the look and feel of the top liner lock and its ample button? I sure do!

But nothing beats a crossbar lock. And where I think a crossbar lock on the 299 would take away from its overall style appeal, function trumps form in the world of knives every time.

Final Thoughts: Who’s It For?

I consider around 100 knives a year and test roughly half of them. Some of those that I test are great, some are good, and some you’ll never read about because I’m not in the business of ripping a brand apart over a miss.

Out of all of those knives, there are maybe half a dozen that really blow my mind. That’s right, six! In the world of folding knives, the Vosteed Psyop 299 is my top pick from those half-dozen that I have tested this year.

I’m not just enthusiastic to be enthusiastic. I approach each knife and tool I test and review from both an engineering and an end-user perspective. I look at trends in the industry, along with what the product can do and where it can do it. So far, I have yet to find the limit for the Psyop 299 based on what it should be able to do. Every outing with it sheds more light on its capabilities.

So, if you were to ask me who this knife is for, it’s probably going to take less time for me to tell you who it isn’t for. And even there, I’m hard pressed to think of anyone who wouldn’t appreciate it. It will outperform indoors, outdoors, and anywhere else that exists on this linear plane.

President Trump’s tariffs remain a controversial policy for U.S. businesses — and that’s apparently true for U.S. knife makers as well. 

Soon after taking office this year, Trump levied tariffs, or taxes, on a host of goods and materials imported from other countries. But even brands making products in the U.S. still rely on foreign production for many materials. These components are often too expensive when sourced from the U.S. Sometimes, they’re unavailable from anywhere but countries like China. 

That has put a strain on many outdoor gear brands, and it’s going to take a toll on the knife and tool industry, according to a 2025 survey from the American Knife & Tool Institute (AKTI). The survey confirms that “tariffs represent a threat to the financial stability and market performance of U.S. knife manufacturers, retailers, and importers,” the group said in a news release last week.

The vast majority of knife brands said that tariffs would increase costs. If the tariffs continue, most of the brands surveyed said they would have to raise prices to stay in business.

“This notion that these tariffs are paid by other countries — it’s just not true,” Mark Schreiber, vice president of AKTI, told GearJunkie. “We’re all trying to be thoughtful about how we go about this, but you can only absorb so much of this before you have to pass it on.”

Despite China Deal, Tariffs Remain Problematic

Last week, Trump reached a new deal with China over U.S. tariffs. After Trump threatened to raise tariffs to 100% on all Chinese goods, he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping to de-escalate the situation.

The new deal averts Trump’s threat, and instead extends a delicate truce between the world’s two largest economies for about a year.

However, the truce doesn’t substantively change the tariffs impacting the knife industry and many outdoor sectors, according to AKTI. Even after the new deal, knives from China are subject to an additional 20% tariff. Even more importantly, they’re still subject to the Section 232 steel tariffs that Trump enacted in February. Those steel tariffs demand an additional 50% tariff that remains in place even with the new deal.

Take the example of a $100 CRKT knife made in China. Under the current tariffs, CRKT has to pay an additional 50.4% on the total price of the product ($50.40). If the knife’s value includes $20 of non-U.S. steel, there’s a 50% tariff on that as well ($10).

“These are cost increases we would either have to absorb or pass some or all of that onto our customers,” said Schreiber, who serves as CRKT’s president, in addition to his role with AKTI.

Vast Majority of Knife Makers Impacted

The AKTI survey included responses from 50 U.S. brands making knives and/or multitools. Brand names were kept anonymous, but most of them are medium- and small-sized businesses. They include a mix of knife importers as well as brands conducting at least some of their manufacturing in the U.S.

The survey’s key findings include the following:

• 90% of respondents believe the tariffs will increase the overall cost of knives and related products.
• 66% of respondents anticipate passing these increased costs directly to consumers.
• 81% of respondents have already observed a significant change in consumer behavior, overwhelmingly reporting a demonstrable decrease in sales volume.
• 77% of industry participants believe the recent tariff increases will negatively affect the American knife industry.

CRKT, a frequently reviewed knife brand on GearJunkie, mostly imports knives from China and sells them in the U.S. Though Schreiber wouldn’t name a specific number for how much the brand has paid in tariffs this year, he said, “It’s in the six figures. It’s real money.”

If the tariffs continue, brands like CRKT will have to raise prices. That could make it even harder to entice American consumers, many of whom are already facing cost-of-living increases, rising inflation, and ballooning healthcare costs. “Knives to some degree are more of a discretionary purchase,” Schreiber said. “Knives can be a victim of people tightening their budgets for higher-priced groceries.” 

Consumers Already Pulling Back

According to the survey, American consumers may already be doing exactly that. The vast majority of surveyed knife brands said they’ve already seen decreases in recent sales.

The situation is made more difficult because of a lack of information from the White House. About half of the brands said they were “not at all satisfied” about access to reliable tariff information. This chaotic environment began early in Trump’s second term, when he instituted what he calls “reciprocal tariffs” in April. The impact of these complicated taxes has had an even bigger impact than just the tariffs on steel, Schreiber said.

In many cases, knife brands are facing 20-40% tariff increases. For China, specifically, tariffs for some U.S. brands importing materials or other goods could rise to 50% or more. That’s just not sustainable, Schreiber said.
