Tesla vehicles come with essentially zero buttons. But, most of us want actual buttons for common tasks.

A Norwegian startup, Greenmission, has a solution for your Tesla button desires. It is trying to launch the second generation of its Tesla OEM-style add-on buttons. The Ctrl-Bar 2 is an accessory that attaches under the Model 3 and Y’s center screen, offering fully programmable physical buttons.

Not Everyone Is Ready for Full Screens

One of Tesla’s killer features has always been a near-complete absence of in-cabin buttons. You get a couple that are legally required, but nearly every control in the vehicle is managed via the touchscreen.

For plenty of tech-hungry buyers, it’s great. But for the increasing number of vehicle shoppers who demand buttons to run their climate controls, it’s a nonstarter. For those who learned they needed buttons after the sale, it’s a disaster.

Greenmission’s Ctrl-Platform looks to remedy the problem, at least for anyone who thinks it needs fixing. The company is offering three different add-ons that work together to try and make the Model 3 and Model Y a little easier for us troglodytes.

Greenmission Ctrl-Bar 2 Adds Knobs & Buttons

The Ctrl-Bar 2 is the main focus. It’s a small pod that attaches to the car just under the screen. It has two aluminum knobs to control the driver’s and passenger-side vent temperatures.

Between the knobs are a series of buttons that can run commands that would otherwise be screen-only. Things you rarely use, like opening the frunk or trunk, or unlocking the doors.

The best part is that you can customize them, with Greenmission showing mirror adjustments or wiper controls among the options. The color display will also adjust between different buttons when you’re parked or moving.

Ctrl-Stripe

Ctrl-Stripe is a light bar that plugs into the Bar 2 and goes behind the steering wheel to fix another Tesla owner gripe. Tesla’s turn signal lights, the little green arrows that tell you the signal is on, appear on the screen. Stripe gives you a much larger green indicator light that’s right in front of you for better visibility.

The Stripe light bar will also alert you with animations to match other vehicle functions. Or you can just light it up to match the car’s ambient lighting and look cool.

Ctrl-Bridge

Lastly is the Ctrl-Bridge. This one plugs into the car’s diagnostic port to give you even more control over your Tesla. You’ll need the Bridge to make the extra shortcuts work on the Bar 2, and it can add features like more control over regenerative braking.

Setup for the features is done through Greenmission’s app. Link your Tesla, set up the commands you want, and the unit is good to go. It will work with all Model 3 and Y vehicles, though the latest ones will need an extra month of development.

Greenmission Is Crowdfunding Its Ctrl Controls

As it did with the original Ctrl-Bar, Greenmission is crowdsourcing its funding. The original was through Indiegogo; this one is looking for backing via Kickstarter. The company is more than halfway to its $29,000 goal, with the project ending on Dec. 18.

The elements are surprisingly affordable for tech like this. The Greenmission Ctrl-Bar 2 reward is $208, including shipping, with a March delivery estimate. Adding the Stripe brings that to $252. Getting all three, the Bar 2, Bridge, and Stripe, is currently $287 (approximate sums converted from euros).

We’re torn on this one. It’s great that you can make your Tesla Model 3 or Model Y more like a so-called normal car. But it’s also frustrating when car companies — and Tesla is far from the only one doing it — get rid of all the buttons for touchscreens. Please, automakers, stop it!

If you’re a bit intimidated by adding a roof accessory to your rig, the user-friendly Yakima Skybox Carbonite ($550-820) is a great option. The design includes five size options. Tried and true, this rooftop cargo box is among the most durable and secure on the market. The silhouette is streamlined, narrow, and long.

We use ours in all seasons and across various outdoor trips to load up skis or kayak paddles for the family. And there’s still space on the roof rack for our bikes, kayaks, or standup paddleboards — that’s pretty hard to beat.

We appreciate the texturized lid, which helps hide scuff marks and grime. Plus, the box is mostly weatherproof (but we recommend that electronics or valuables go inside the cab or a dry bag for good measure).

The listed weight capacity for the Carbonite is 165 pounds, but Yakima says that the capacity may vary depending on the vehicle. 

Overall, between the ease of use and installation, the relatively low price, and the ability to access cargo from either side, the Yakima Skybox Carbonite is our go-to.

We’re hard-pressed to find a more dependable investment than a RocketBox — some of our family members still have theirs from the ’90s. Today’s Yakima RocketBox Pro ($470-600) comes in several capacities. Plus, the 11- and 12-cubic-foot options are on the lower end of the price scale.

You could pick up a more compact choice like the Inno Ridge Box ($400) for less money with no space to haul skis or snowboards. But the extra bucks could be worth the length and the decades of use you’ll get out of the RocketBox. 

While it doesn’t have the sturdy feel that you’d find on higher-end boxes, we never experienced any on-the-road failures. Thule is a clear frontrunner in the rooftop cargo box game, so it should come as no surprise that their latest release is a huge contender for one of the best on the market. The Thule Motion 3 XL ($999) offers a lightweight, easy-to-install, and aerodynamic rooftop box that also sports a clean, sporty look.

The 18 cubic feet of storage space of our test model provides enough room for both ski trips and camping getaways while not being overly tall. The handle provides easy one-handed access for fast loading and unloading, which is easy to reach from the ground, even on taller SUVs. It also comes with a helpful strap to pull the unit shut from the ground. This makes it much easier to avoid having to climb on the seat of larger vehicles, a welcome feature, especially in the wintertime.

But the main feature here that really shines is the speed at which you can install and remove this box. It’s perfect for people who don’t always need or want the box installed and have the space to store it when not in use. At 51 pounds, the Thule Motion 3 XL is not the lightest model we tested, but the weight is balanced enough that we could install it without help from another person.

On the premium end, the Thule Vector ($2,400) is one of the sleekest, most stylish, and superbly made options out there. This luxurious rooftop cargo box features two models with the same volume and load capacity but different dimensions and weights. Beyond its classier shape, we found the design extremely functional, easy to install, and simple to operate daily. To boot, this rigid box is reinforced with steel along the base.

As you’ve probably noticed, this is one of the pricier options you’ll find, and there are some very cool features that come along with the price tag. There are integrated tie-down straps, which were useful in preventing our gear from sliding around, and a white interior lid and integrated LED light that illuminated the contents, making it easy to find our gear in the dark. Probably the most bougie feature is the felt-lined floor, which keeps your precious gear from getting scratched up during transit. Plus, the whole box just looks pretty damn cool.

That said, if you’re just looking for a rooftop cargo box to throw your gear in, this ain’t the one. But if you want a sharp-looking, capable box with all the bells and whistles (and you’ve got the dough to pay for it), the Thule Vector is the way to go.

Yakima’s Skybox line just expanded with its Skybox NX ($749-$799) to maximize interior space. The larger nose allows duffel bags and small totes to be stowed up front, where normally you’d be wasting space where those items wouldn’t quite fit.

Of course, the tradeoff is a bit less aerodynamic efficiency. However, we couldn’t notice a big difference at the gas pump. What we did notice, though, was more noise with the sunroof open, so this model might not be the best if you have and use a sunroof.

But the Yakima Skybox NX design is one of the best for maximizing space, especially if you have more than just skis to cart around. We could place several large duffel bags and totes inside, which wouldn’t be possible on other models.

While the latches are secure when clicked, it sometimes takes a few tries (especially with a full load) for the latches to click into place. But when it’s in, it’s in. Just make sure you have a proper latch to save the box flying open when it picks up speed (we’re speaking from experience here).

The spacious and functional Thule Force XT ($580-750) comes in four sizes. This build can haul a huge quantity of bulky gear and still handle off-road adventures or winter trips to the local ski mountain. The large curved shape delivers enough room to store scads of gear and is high enough to fit awkwardly shaped objects, and the relatively light weight makes for easy installation and removal.

That shape does come at the cost of streamlining, which means your gas mileage may take a hit. Also, while it does come with a locking system, they feel oddly flimsy, so we’d recommend using them with a light touch.

Ultimately, the silhouette’s generous height and simple installation make the Thule Force XT a solid choice, especially if you’re determined to get a Thule box without paying through the nose. But be sure not to force the locking mechanism and be ready to make a few more pit stops to fill up on gas.

With hardy construction, the Pelican BX140R Cargo Case’s steel latches are e-coated with a corrosion-resistant finish. The lid has a rubber gasket, but these are not submergible. Steve Andrews has been adventuring in vehicles for 25 years. His main chariot has been alive almost as long: a 2003 Toyota 4Runner. As a go-anywhere 4×4, it can handle almost anything underneath it, taking Steve on adventures all around North America. With a growing family and a dog, though, more space was essential. So he set out to find the best rooftop cargo box to pack all the essentials for a family of four (and a dog) to join the journey while still allowing for space inside.

GearJunkie Managing Editor Billy Brown has taken his Subaru Outback across the western United States, living in the back for weeks at a time. He added his insights into what makes a cargo box worth buying and which boxes will serve what kinds of travellers.

Our Testing Process

Steve’s 4Runner is an ideal vehicle to test out rooftop cargo boxes. Being an older V8 vehicle, gas mileage is a large concern for attaching any extra accessories to a vehicle. So Steve set out a baseline for 50 miles on the highway and measured the gas consumption without any boxes compared to the boxes on top. In addition, since the vehicle has a higher roof, putting stuff in and out of the box is a bit more difficult than say, a Honda Civic.

To further add to that, Steve enlisted help from a tech-savvy, gadget-loving friend who has the latest Tesla model Y, where battery consumption can be measured by the minute. Combining this data allowed us to measure the efficiency of these boxes without having to trust the manufacturer’s word for it.

Additionally, we tested how easy or difficult it was to install these boxes. Can it be done single-handedly, or do you need help from a friend (or several friends)? Is the latching system secure? How easy or difficult is it to open the box with a bunch of gear in the other hand? And when it’s time to close it shut, do you need to fidget the handle to make sure it’s closed or is it one simple maneuver?

Then, we paid close attention to how secure the box was on the roof while driving. The last thing you’d want is any vibration or deafening noise to scare others around you. So, after ensuring we installed it correctly, we checked the box at speed with the windows and sunroof open to see how kind it was to those around us. 

Our Rooftop Cargo Box Rating System

Each cargo box in this guide was tested and scored in four main categories: Volume, Ease of Use, Security, and Value.

Value considers how well a cargo box performs for its price, factoring in capacity, durability, weight range, and price. A budget-friendly option can score high here if it delivers strong performance for the cost.

Volume is pretty straightforward. We looked at how many cubic feet each box would hold. In addition, we evaluated the shape of the boxes and whether or not they would accommodate large or unusually-shaped objects. If boxes had the same volume but one could fit larger duffels or skis more easily, that box would get a higher rating.

Ease of Use factored in how easy a box was to install and remove, how easy it was to load and unload gear, and how reliable the locking mechanism was. We also considered some comfort features, such as lined interiors, whether a box opened on both sides, and perks like interior lighting.

Security considers whether or not a box will keep your gear safe. If the box had a sturdy shell and a reliable locking mechanism, it received a higher score. If, during testing, a lock was difficult to use or unreliable (or nonexistent), the score took a hit.

Value considers how well a cargo box performs for its price. We consider all the factors above, take in added features, and add a bit of subjective opinion. A budget-friendly option can score low here if it delivers a weak performance for the cost, and an expensive version can have a higher rating if we feel that it’s worth the price.

The overall score is not a simple average of these categories. Instead, it reflects our editorial judgment based on the complete user experience. That means a less secure cargo box with extremely high volume can still score high, while a cargo box that scores high for value might rank lower if it’s difficult to use.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a Rooftop Cargo Box

Roof Length Compatibility

It’s key to make sure the box can seamlessly pair with your vehicle’s roof and rack, especially if you have a top-hinged trunk. First, position the front crossbar as far forward as possible (some are not adjustable). Then, open the hatch and measure from the back hatch to the center of the vehicle’s front crossbar.

That distance needs to exceed the hatch clearance of a cargo box, which is listed on the manufacturer’s website. You’ll also want to be sure the length doesn’t hinder visibility up front or hit any antennas.

Rack Setup

If you’ve never owned a rooftop setup, this is rack 101. The mount is a component that runs lengthwise (front to back) and attaches to the top of your vehicle. Generally, vehicles come with factory mounts like raised rails, tracks, or fixed points.

If you’re working with a bare roof, you can permanently mount a rack or opt for a setup that’s compatible with the door jamb. Two crossbars or load bars sit perpendicular to the roof and are attached to the mount via four compatible towers. Crossbars vary in size and shape.

Each cargo box is compatible with specific crossbars, so make sure those crossbars work with your vehicle and mount or if an adapter is required.

Carrying Purpose and Capacity

Before you start shopping for a rooftop cargo box, take a look at your gear. What do you need and intend to carry on trips? Shorter or packable items like camp chairs or sleeping bags generally fit well in rooftop cargo boxes.

Lengthier items like skis, paddles, golf clubs, and strollers will require a longer box like the Yakima Skybox Carbonite — make sure the box’s internal dimensions fit the length of your equipment.

Read the width and height of each box to help conceptualize the overall volume. Boxes also list the gear capacity in cubic feet (or inches or liters). The more people in your group, the more space you’ll need for each individual’s gear.

Weight

There are two weight factors to take into account: the cargo box weight and the weight capacity of the box. The cargo boxes listed here range from 20 to 66 pounds without any cargo. The majority of these carriers safely hold a weight capacity of up to 165 pounds, but others are lower, around 110 or even 50 pounds.

Don’t sacrifice the cost for a less structural cargo box if you need to transport heavier items. Your heftiest cargo, like a loaded cooler, is easier and safer to store inside the vehicle.

Check with each box manufacturer for a specific box’s weight limits. Likewise, check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the recommended maximum load. You’ll need to subtract the weight of the box, aftermarket towers, and crossbars, as well as the maximum weight of the cargo stored inside the box.

Materials

Cargo boxes are built with durable plastic, and a handful have additional reinforcements, such as the steel along the base of the Thule Vector. Others are coated with an additional finish for extra durability and weather resistance. For example, the Pelican BX140R Cargo Case has a corrosion-resistant coat.

The hardware, like the latches and lock systems, varies in quality, which is reflected in the price. Overall, the size and materials influence the box’s weight, too.

Water Resistance

Most rooftop cargo box designs are extremely weather-resistant, thanks to a waterproof shell and weather sealing, so they’ll generally do a great job of blocking snow and rain. Some even feature a liner for water resistance, like the integrated rubber gasket of the Pelican BX140R Cargo Case.

However, none of these cargo boxes claim to be completely waterproof. We recommend you store any water-sensitive, precious cargo in a dry bag or inside the rig.

Extra Features

A handful of the top-shelf designs have extra features for comfort, utility, and ease of use. For instance, we appreciate the interior LED lights of the Thule Vector, as well as its long handle strap.

Installation and Ease of Use

Installing a rooftop cargo box can vary from model to model, but there are a few general steps and tips to ensure a smooth setup. First, always start by carefully reading the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Most cargo boxes are designed for easy installation, often requiring no tools, thanks to hand-tightening knobs and pre-installed mounting hardware.

For ease of use, look for boxes with dual-side opening features. Let’s face it — cargo boxes are pricey. Depending on the box, you can spend anywhere from $200 to $300 for a no-frills cargo carrier to well over $1,000 for a secure, aerodynamic spaceship-looking roof pod. More affordable options will leave more money in your bank account but may leave you missing some options. On the other hand, the higher-end cargo boxes may have you shelling out money for perks you don’t need. Budget

If all you need is some extra storage space, you can get by with something like the Pelican BX140R Cargo Case ($300-450). Even though it’s half the price of some of the other items on our list, the weatherproof boxes come in four sizes and are made with tough rotomolded plastic and corrosion-resistant steel latches. You won’t be able to fit a pair of skis in these, and they don’t offer fancy details like dual-side opening and an interior light, but if you simply want to add a few more square feet of storage, this is a budget-friendly option.

Mid-Tier

For $500-$1,500, you’ll find bigger storage options, more streamlined, aerodynamic exteriors and more convenience than you might from a budget cargo box. For instance, the Thule Motion 3 XL ($999) offers one-handed access for quick loading, an aerodynamic profile, and a cool strap that lets you pull it shut from the ground.

Premium

Going over $1,500 puts you in the luxury category here. The Thule Vector ($2,400) is a great example of what you get at this price range, with interior tie-down straps to keep things in place during transit, a felt-lined floor to prevent your gear from getting scratched, and an LED light integrated into the lid that lets you see the box’s contents at night. Do you need all these features? Probably not. But are they convenient if you’ve got the dough? Absolutely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are rooftop cargo boxes universal?

Rooftop cargo boxes are not all created equal. The designs vary by weight, dimensions, gear capacity, and rigidity. You’ll need to consider what type of gear you need to haul as well as your vehicle length and roof capacity.

The best rooftop cargo box will fit well with adequate hatch clearance. Also, note certain cargo boxes are compatible with specific crossbar or load bar models, shapes, and size ranges. Be sure to get the correct setup for your vehicle.

Can a rooftop cargo box be too big?

A larger rooftop cargo box might not be the best choice for your vehicle and purpose. If a box length exceeds the rooftop clearance, it can hinder the hatchback when it swings up, or it can potentially hang over the roof in the front, impeding windshield visibility.

Bigger designs are more challenging to move and store, have a greater impact on fuel efficiency, are costlier, and are noisier while on the road. Be sure not to exceed the maximum length and weight your vehicle’s roof can carry.

How do you pack a rooftop cargo box?

Place the heaviest and the majority of the cargo in the center of the box and the lightest items toward the nose and tail. Use tiedown straps, which are included in some designs, to secure loose goods if the box isn’t full.

Though many cargo boxes are weatherproof, most manufacturers suggest putting electronics and valuables in a dry bag for extra protection.

Can you drive with an empty rooftop cargo box?

Without additional weight, empty cargo boxes can get slightly jostled around by the wind, which could cause audible drag. If you don’t mind the potential noise, then it’s technically fine to drive with an empty rooftop cargo box. That said, the lifespan of the box will be extended if you store it safely away from the elements between long periods of nonuse.

Also, removing the cargo box could lead to greater fuel economy in the long haul. But for weekend warriors who commute 20 minutes to work several days a week, the repeated mount time might not be worthwhile, especially in a mild climate.

How should you store your rooftop cargo box?

When your rooftop cargo box isn’t mounted on your vehicle, it’s good to store it in a cool, dry indoor space like a garage, attic, or basement. It’s ideal to keep it out of direct sunlight and extremely hot or cold temperatures.

You can set the box flat on the ground — or atop a couple of 2x4s — or rig it to hang on a wall via the base side.

At first blush, one might be tempted to dismiss the Hyundai CRATER Concept debuting at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show as little more than a fantasy. That would be a mistake, GearJunkie has learned.

While there are some obvious show car novelties, like the flashlights built into CRATER’s sideview mirrors, senior Hyundai officials confided they are looking to dramatically extend the brand’s off-road capabilities.

At an otherwise somnambulant 2025 Los Angeles Auto Show, Hyundai delivered plenty of much-needed excitement on Thursday, notably with the debut of the CRATER Concept.  It has all the trappings of a classic show car, an over-the-top design with some wild and wide-eyed features, like the bottle opener built into one of its recovery hooks.

But a closer inspection should give encouragement to those hoping CRATER will live on past this year’s auto show season. One hint is the XRT badge embossed into the right corner of CRATER’s tailgate. That’s the designation Hyundai has been using for more rugged versions of its current model lineup, such as the Ioniq 5 XRT, Santa Cruz XRT, and Santa Fe XRT.

Hyundai Gets Adventurous 

“We’re very serious” about going well beyond the capabilities of even the XRT Pro trim introduced with the 2026 Palisade SUV, Randy Parker, president and CEO of Hyundai North America, told GearJunkie in an exclusive interview. “The plan is to definitely enhance our off-road capabilities and be more adventurous … over the next couple years,” Parker explained.

“This is not just a concept car,” added SangYup Lee, executive vice president and head of global design at Hyundai Motor Co. “It could very easily be turned into a production car.”

Rugged New Design

Hyundai describes the CRATER Concept’s exterior design language as “The Art of Steel.” That fits the rugged look of the prototype, starting with the extensive underbody cladding designed to protect CRATER from the roughest obstacles it might face out on the trail. That extends to critical portions of the body and rocker panels, said Lee, which is painted in a green-gold matte paint “drawing inspiration” from the California coast.

He noted that his design team has been working with the steelmaking arm of the Hyundai conglomerate to come up with alloys that are both rugged and able to be formed into appealing shapes.

Roughly the size of today’s compact Tucson, CRATER has an imposing presence, enhanced by its sharp creases and 18-inch wheels — meant to look like the crater left after an asteroid impact, the company explained. They’re shod in 33-inch all-terrain tires.

A distinctively styled roof rack was designed as a mounting point for auxiliary lights, additional storage, and other accessories.

Among the more unusual features: a pair of “limb risers,” cables stretching from hood to roof, Hyundai noted, to provide “added protection from low-hanging branches on narrow and overgrown trails.” Then there are those flashlights built into the sideview mirrors. They can be removed, as can the built-in cameras to record “breathtaking views or even record exciting adventures,” Hyundai noted in a news release.

CRATER Interior Design

CRATER’s cabin is a hybrid design emphasizing both ruggedness and technology. The squared-off steering wheel has dedicated buttons that allow a motorist to immediately select from Snow, Sand, Mud, Auto, and XRT drive modes, each adjusting a variety of vehicle functions, including drivetrain, braking, and shifts.

The instrument panel itself is finished in a perforated material designed to let soft ambient lighting pass through. Above the IP, a full-width head-up display could serve up a variety of simultaneous projections, including vehicle data, augmented-reality navigation, and more. The philosophy behind CRATER’s technology is BYOD. “Bring Your Own Device,” the automaker said, allowing a motorist to create “a flexible and customizable digital experience that adapts to various situations and individual user preferences.”

What Hyundai Isn’t Talking About — Yet

For all the details Hyundai offered up during the CRATER concept’s L.A. debut, the automaker was decidedly mum on one key point: what we would find were we able to lift open the hood. The good news for Hyundai is that it has a variety of options in its toolbox, from internal combustion engines to all-electric, with a variety of different hybrid alternatives, as well.

It’s also working up range-extender technology where the wheels are driven solely by electric motors — but an ICE system serves as a generator, providing a continuing flow of current once the battery pack is drained.

We do know that CRATER has some useful off-road systems, including not only those selectable driver modes but downhill brake control — a sort of low-speed cruise control — and trailer brake control. It also has a built-in compass and altimeter, and both a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit.

Playing in the Sand Box

Asked whether the comments made by Parker and Lee should be dismissed as hyperbole, a well-placed Hyundai insider, asking for anonymity, noted what’s happened to the old Genesis design studio at Hyundai’s California product development center.

It’s been transformed into something of an off-roader’s fantasyland dubbed “The Sand Box,” and is meant to encourage development of ever more rugged products that would wear the XRT and XRT Pro badges in the coming years.

Since Hyundai first released a few CRATER Concept renderings earlier this week, there’s been speculation on how far it might go. Would it, for example, dare to challenge off-road icons like the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco? Design chief Lee wouldn’t rule that possibility out, though CRATER, as the concept stands, doesn’t offer at least one key feature Wrangler and Bronco buyers would seemingly expect: removable doors and glass.

That wouldn’t be out of the realm for a production design, said Lee, though he also stressed that, in production, Hyundai might target “many different types of outdoor activities.”

Neither of the executives would provide hard timing for a production vehicle on par with the Hyundai CRATER Concept — but they made it clear that the automaker is taking the concept quite seriously and won’t shunt it aside once this auto show season wraps up.

The Jeep Gladiator is getting a little historic special edition. The new 2026 Jeep Gladiator Willys ’41 model is a nod to Jeep’s military truck experience — one that will come with beefy steel bumpers, the hood from the Mojave, and some of the coolest Jeep wheels in a long time.

Willys ’41 Launched on Wrangler Last Year

Jeep first launched the Willys ’41 model on the Wrangler 4xe last year. Influenced by the ’41 Concept of 2022, it expanded on the Willys trim and the olive-drab ’41 paint inspired by the original 1941 military Jeeps.

You could (and still can) get a Wrangler or Gladiator Willys in a range of colors, and you can get the ’41 paint on any version of either Jeep. But the Willys ’41 gives you things you can’t get any other way.

It starts with the 17-inch wheels, which are painted the same olive as the body. They’re a cool design that looks like a vintage steel wheel, but are built in a modern size for this modern Jeep.

You also get the hood from the desert-rated Mojave. It’s a taller hood with a big scoop, but it’s all about cosmetics, not function. A hood scoop like that wouldn’t work in the desert anyway, but Jeep thinks buyers will appreciate the look.

Package Includes Chunky Mud Tires on Retro-Style Wheels

The mud-terrain tires should add some function, even if the hood and wheels don’t. The 4xe version came with 33-inch BFGs. The Gladiator shows Firestone MTs in the images, but Jeep didn’t give us a size. We’ve reached out to get that important detail.

Other useful upgrades include the steel front and rear bumpers as well as a Mopar grille guard. The tubular grille guard should add some helpful protection if you get a little too close to an obstacle or need to give something a shove. Willys ’41 graphics on the hood are the final historic detail. Jeep wraps up the package with special tan seat inserts and a green cloth-wrapped bolster. No, there are no photos of the interior, so we’ve posted a standard Gladiator’s insides.

2026 Jeep Gladiator Willys ’41 Adds $2,610

Like all Gladiators this year, the Willys ’41 will come with a 3.6L V6. It makes 285 horsepower and can tow up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped. You won’t see a locking rear differential on the highlights list like you did for the 4xe, but that’s because the Willys Gladiator already includes one.

How much for the Jeep Kaiser M715-inspired 2026 Jeep Gladiator Willys ’41? The truck starts from $47,840 plus $1,995 destination. That’s $2,610 more than a standard Gladiator Willys, though about $500 of that is the drab green paint. Expect the Willys ’41 at dealers soon, and orders are open now.

This is the 2027 Kia Telluride inside and out. Earlier this month, Kia showed us the exterior of the newest version of its biggest crossover. Now it’s time for the inside and a look at what’s under the skin. This time around, the Telluride has more interior space, more comfort, and, for the first time, hybrid power.

Inside Looks Much Better Than Outside

When Kia revealed the outside of its new X-Pro Telluride model, we were on the fence about the looks. A Range Rover-like rear end and a front with no face left us underwhelmed. For a deeper dive and a closer look at the exterior, see our coverage of the design reveal. Now that we’ve seen other versions of the model, those initial opinions haven’t changed.

The exterior design doesn’t matter when you’re in the driver’s seat, and that’s fortunate for Kia. The 2027 Kia Telluride’s cabin is much less polarizing and looks cozier and more appealing.

Dual 12.3-inch screens are the highlight. Climate control functions are moved from the center stack to the center of the screen. They’re hidden behind the steering wheel if you’re having trouble finding them.

Big grab handles on the center console are a carryover from the first Telluride. Dual wireless charge pads are new, and between the cupholder cover, a cubby underneath, and the phone pads, the 2027 Telluride has loads of space for storage.

The new Telluride adds streaming video, including Disney+, Netflix, and YouTube. You’ll be able to add Disney-themed layouts for the center screen as well as NBA team themes. Kia has added a new AI assistant, which lets you control things like navigation and the radio using “Hey, Kia” commands.

X-Pro Adds More Rough-Road Capability

If you’re reading this, it’s the Telluride X-Pro that probably has your attention. X-Pro is Kia’s trim level aimed at “rugged excursions.” This year, it has 9.1 inches of ground clearance. It also has more suspension travel to help you actually get a benefit from the off-road suspension tuning. The Telluride X-Pro comes with all-terrain tires, front and rear recovery points, and an electronic limited-slip differential. Combined with a locking center differential, the X-Pro can make sure at least one tire with traction gets power.

If that gravel road gets tougher than expected, the 2027 Telluride X-Pro has a new Ground View Monitor. At speeds under 6 mph, it lets you see immediately in front of and beside the vehicle. The X-Pro will also come with extra exterior lights to help give your campsite a bit more illumination.

Hybrid, 2.5T Replace V6

Last year’s V6 engine is gone. In its place are two 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The standard engine makes 274 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. That’s less than the V6’s 291 horsepower, but the turbo makes an extra 49 pound-feet of torque.

Kia’s first Telluride hybrid adds an electric motor to that engine, boosting output to 329 horsepower and 339 pound-feet. That’s up 38 horsepower and 77 pound-feet over the V6, and Kia says it should return 35 mpg in combined driving. So it has more power and an extra 15 mpg.

Both engines will offer front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. A properly equipped hybrid can tow 4,500 pounds, while the non-hybrid can tow 5,000.

2027 Kia Telluride Arrives Early Next Year

Kia has made the 2027 Telluride longer than before. The 116.9-inch wheelbase and 119.2-inch overall lengths are 2.7 and 2.3 inches up from last year. Kia says that space delivers more legroom in rows two and three.

Total cargo space is now 22.3 cubic feet with all of the seats in place, 46.3 with the third row folded, and 86.9 cubic feet with both rows flat. The second-row bench can now slide forward with child seats installed and slides further forward for easier third-row access.

The 2027 Kia Telluride is set to go on sale in the first quarter of 2026. Kia hasn’t announced pricing yet for the SUV, which is built at its plant in Georgia. Expect that figure, along with full fuel economy estimates, early next year.

I glance at the route guide, “rocky surface ahead.” Having already ascended past 6,000 feet above sea level on a narrow, pockmark-laden, uneven dirt path, I wondered how much more this non-Wilderness Subaru could take.

Turns out, plenty. Courtesy of 8.7 inches of ground clearance and inherent off-road strength in the suspension, the seventh-generation Outback marched right up the trail, even as 6-foot-wide sheets of flat rock and other jagged edges sprang from the ground to attack the tires and underfloor.

It’s moments like this that affirmed my decision to quickly say yes to Subaru’s offer to hitch a ride to Sedona, Ariz., and give this taller, boxier Outback a go. Its new look proved to merely scratch the surface of the work engineers put into its now 30-year-old crossover. But, does it meet the demands of picky, modern-world buyers? Time to find out.

In short: Carrying on with largely similar dimensions to the outgoing model, the new Outback starts at a higher price and looks — frankly — awkward. But the improved refinement in the powertrain, suspension, and cabin isolation more than make up for it. Beyond that, Subaru crammed it full of useful features for those eager to get out in the wild. I particularly like the multipurpose tonneau cover that’s machine washable. The 2026 Subaru Outback remains just as off-road capable and behaves much better while on it.

2026 Subaru Outback Review

New, Taller Shape

Thirty-one years ago, the Outback entered the market as the Legacy Outback, a lifted version of the station wagon with a bit of cladding. Now, the Outback has shucked its wagon shape in exchange for a boxier form.

The seventh-generation 2026 Outback stands 1.4 inches taller than the outgoing model but otherwise stays within 0.2 inches dimensionally. In fact, both ground clearance and wheelbase remain the exact same, 8.7 inches and 108.1 inches, respectively.

Subaru calls it “wagon dimensions with SUV styling.” I call it busy. While the Outback looks functional and purposeful, several contrasting lines weave throughout the body, especially the front end, in a way I find unsettling.

The split headlights exacerbate that sense. DRLs hang out high, main beams mounted in the middle, fog lights down low. Three levels of light.

The new rear end follows the trend, getting full-width taillights across the middle of the tailgate. Beneath that: OUTBACK in large black font. For good measure, the matte black bumper reads SUBARU in massive lettering down low. You also get a roof-mounted spoiler and a much closer to vertical rear windshield. The latter looks appropriate and helps give the Outback more cargo space (more on that in a moment).

Built from the Subaru global platform, the new Outback also benefits from additional work to the aerodynamics and cabin isolation. Engineers incorporated vents at the rear of the front wheel well to relieve high-pressure zones, improved underfloor covers, and even worked to better channel air around the roof rack.

For a bit of splash, Subaru used a “shark skin” texture on the front bumper and “golf ball” on the D-pillar to manipulate the air further. Moreover, the latest Outback received more sound-deadening material. Altogether, it travels down the road much quieter than before. A huge improvement.

Oh, one more thing: The Outback lineup now starts at the Premium trim, and then moves to the Limited, Touring, Limited XT, Touring XT, and finally, the Wilderness, which will arrive in early 2026.

Modernized Inside

For the interior, standard equipment includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.1-inch center display. The latter wirelessly connects to both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Several practical, user-friendly improvements also came along for the ride. To start, the standard dual-zone climate control system uses dedicated, hard button controls, separate from the center display.  

From there, Subaru enlarged the cubby for stuff in front of the shifter and moved the cupholders forward. That makes cups much easier to reach, and spaces for handles allow those cups to be mugs, too. Subaru even added a nice little cable clip to keep charging cords organized, improved seat comfort, and utilized the Outback’s additional height to increase headroom.

As you move up the trim line, Subaru throws in more goodies. While heated front seats come standard, you need at least a Limited trim to also heat the steering wheel and rear seats. Subaru upholsters those seats in leather, by the way, which goes lovely with the power moonroof and wireless smartphone charger.

Touring trims swap in Nappa leather for the interior and also add ventilation to the front seats. Furthermore, you get a full 360-degree view of immediate surroundings, courtesy of the included surround-view camera system.

Cargo Area, Roof Rack, and Multipurpose Cover

In many ways, the real practical genius went into the cargo area. First, the aforementioned more upright rear windshield, combined with the added height, helped increase space by 2 cubic feet with the rear seats up, now 34.6 cubic feet instead of 32.6. Moreover, the cargo opening is taller and closer to square, making it easier to load large things. It’s also a standard power liftgate.

A couple of levers in back, mounted at about shoulder height on either side, make folding the spring-loaded, split second-row seats easy and immediate. Doing so increases cargo space to 80.5 cubic feet.

And use that space in many ways, courtesy of a new, machine-washable, multi-functional cargo cover. Using both hooks and magnetic ends, it mounts itself in several locations in the cargo area. Strap it in the middle of the bay to partition the space. Mount it in back and lay it over the rear bumper to protect the Outback from dirty feet (or paws) or vice versa. Use it as a traditional privacy panel.

Or, my favorite, mount the ends in the middle attachments and give yourself an equipment hammock to keep clean things separate from dirty things. I love it. For even more space, feel free to utilize the ladder-type roof rails, capable of holding up 800 pounds of stuff while stopped and 220 pounds while on the move. It’s the same setup originally only offered on the Outback Wilderness.

To make loading it easier, Subaru included measurements on the rails itself to easily keep the load even from side to side. Finally, Subaru added a removable panel to more readily access a tow hitch. 

Oh, and while you use your cargo bay, the new Outback gets a bigger battery, which allows you to power accessories without concern of draining it. Nice. Inflate your paddleboards without worry.

Base Powertrain

Among the six trims offered for 2026, the base Premium, Limited, and Touring trims get propelled by a naturally aspirated, 2.5L flat-four engine. It makes 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, matching the new-for-2025 Subaru Forester. That’s 2 fewer horsepower, but 2 more pound-feet than the outgoing 2.5L. The engine attaches to a continuously variable transmission, or CVT, before sending power to all four wheels.

Fortunately, also like the Forester, the new engine runs more quietly and smoothly. It’s far from spritely, however. I got to spend an hour behind the wheel of a Touring equipped as such, meaning its 3,812-pound curb weight resulted in a 21.1:1 weight-to-power ratio.

In my 2026 Outback Touring tester, I buried the throttle from rest, and it eased off the line with little interest in rushing. A couple of seconds later, the engine revs reached its 5,800-rpm power peak and motivated the Outback forward at a respectable clip. I went across back roads, highways, and dirt. In most circumstances, the standard engine moved the Outback along fine. Just don’t ever race for pink slips.

Turbo Power

Thankfully, the Limited XT, Touring XT, and Wilderness swap in a turbocharged 2.4L flat-four — indeed, the same one offered before. And it outputs the same at 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. With the 82 extra horsepower, the weight-to-power ratio drops to a much healthier 15.3:1. Like the 2.5L, it bolts up to a CVT before sending power to all four wheels. That combination certainly makes the Outback XT models quicker.

My time with this engine was in a Limited XT. Much of it, I spent off-road. But in those brief moments of pavement, it still resisted hard launches off the line. But once the revs climb toward the now-5,600-rpm power peak. The XT really hustles.

And, while moving, the CVT reacts fast to bring the engine to high revs and provide ample passing power. If you need to pass on a two-lane road, the “kick down” to a lower ratio happens fast, faster than many traditional automatics.

But all of the above comes at a cost at the pump. Without any kind of hybrid help, the Outback falls behind some of its competition. The 2.5L-equipped models manage 25 mpg in the city, 31 on the highway, and 27 combined. Going with the turbo motor drops those figures considerably, managing just 21/29/24 mpg city/highway/combined. That’s well behind the 2026 Honda CR-V TrailSport’s 38/33/35 mpg, for example.

Time for a Cruise

Putting the dragstrip aside, the Outback delivers a comfortable space for four adults, on most any occasion, even a long road trip. At interstate speeds, very little wind or road noise comes through, veering much closer to a premium crossover in quietness.

Moreover, the engine — either engine — stays quiet at nice low rpms while cruising. Traditionally, Subarus have always felt loud and “tinny” to me. No longer — the Outback is a remarkably calming space inside.

Road trips almost certainly will include long stints on the highway, and Subaru’s Eyesight suite of driving aids got a round of updates. Most notably for Touring and Touring XT models, Eyesight now offers a hands-free driving assist — much like GM’s Super Cruise — on select highways and interstates. Except, not quite, the final production software is not yet finished.

For early buyers, a no-cost software update will come soon to add the feature. My Outback Touring included a prototype version of this system, and it worked well during the brief moments I drove on highways the system deemed suitable.

Regardless, you want your hands on the wheel when the going gets twisty. And here, the Outback proved surprisingly enjoyable. Chuck it into a corner, and you will feel understeer as the all-season tires scream in agony.

But the suspension limits body roll, and the all-wheel-drive system lets you apply power aggressively while maintaining chassis balance. It’s like a tall, slow WRX. Fittingly enough, Outback uses a new, more direct-feeling dual-pinion power steering system that’s similar to the WRX.

Where’s the Trailhead?

Fortunately, none of Subaru’s work to improve on-road behavior limited its capability off of it. You still get 8.7-inches of ground clearance. That pairs well with respectable approach, breakover, and departure angle clearances of 18, 21.4, and 19.4 degrees.

My test drive included a long, winding stint up a narrow, pockmarked, uneven, rock-laden trail to a peak 7,800 feet above sea level. The 4,000-foot vertical climb from Sedona kept the Outback on its toes, but the all-wheel-drive system distributed torque to maintain grip, even during the moment when one or even two wheels were dangling in the air.

The only demerit came from the CVT. At a few different moments, large, flat rocks stretched across the trail surface and functioned like a brief, steep ramp to climb. Here, the CVT didn’t want to Outback to budge until I gave it more than half throttle. Then I had to quickly get out of it to keep the Subie from getting squirrely and flinging rocks and loose dirt all over its wheel wells. A traditional automatic with a fixed ratio would help here.

2026 Subaru Outback Review: Pricing & Availability

The base Premium trim starts at $36,445, when you include the $1,450 destination charge. From there, it’s a steady climb to the Limited, Touring, Limited XT, Touring XT, and finally the Wilderness.

My two test cars, a Limited XT and a Touring, cost $46,210 and $47,240, respectively. Adding XT to the title adds about $2,600 to the cost. Aside from acceleration, both trims felt similar: quiet, secure, and capable on the road and off of it. The Outback felt capable for multiple generations now, but never felt this comfortable. The first 2026 Outbacks are rolling into dealerships now.

There’s still time to apply for the 2026 Defender Trophy, but not much. Applications close on Nov. 30 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Up for grabs are a few epic adventures, the Defender Trophy North American Competition and the Global Trophy Competition. First, you must apply to get into the selection event in Canada. Then, you must win that event in August in order to move on to the global finals somewhere in Africa in October.

Defender Trophy North American Competition

If you are selected based on your application (more on that in a minute), the first stop will be the Defender Trophy North American Competition at Stave Lake in Mission, British Columbia, Canada, sometime between April 15 and May 5, 2026, for two consecutive days.

And, this isn’t a free ride. You’ll have to pay your own way to get to and from the competition. However, Land Rover will provide accommodations, food, beverages, and uniforms once there.

In the spirit of the previous Trophy events, the 2026 Defender Trophy North American Competition will be composed of various “challenge” activities, 16 in this case. The idea is to accumulate the maximum number of points possible in each challenge and have the most at the end of the 2 days of competition.

Land Rover also says that “Brand Fit is an essential ingredient to a participant’s complement of skills. As an attribute, it cannot be measured by time or distance, but it can be highly evident in an individual’s attitude, approach, demeanor, confidence, positivity, and openness.”

Bonus points are up for grabs for an “individual’s attitudes and brand fit.” And, “a Brand Fit score of up to an additional 20% of their final score can be added to their score to provide additional points to uplift the exceptional candidates that demonstrated excellent Brand Fit.”

So, in order to win the 2026 Defender Trophy North American Competition, you not only have to excel at the various “challenges,” but you also have a great attitude while doing so, one that Land Rover deems a good brand fit.

Defender Trophy Global

Only two Canadians and two Americans will move on from the North American selections in spring 2026 to the Global Trophy Competition. There, they will join 50 other teams from countries around the world, somewhere in Africa, during the month of October.

The approximate retail value of competing in the Global Trophy Competition is about $35,000. This means that travel, accommodations, and the like are covered if you make it to this stage of the competition.

The Global Trophy Competition will be an “off-road driving competition/adventure” that will span “up to 21 days” in “potentially harsh environments.” You’ll be living outdoors in close proximity to other competitors and “will face obstacles and a selection of mental and physical challenges in a unique test of wit, willpower, and teamwork.”

While scoring will be on an individual basis, competitors will compete in pairs. There will be stages to the competition, and the lowest‑ranked competitor from each stage will be given the first pick of potential teammates ahead of each stage.

A variety of driving challenges, ingenuity challenges, and physical challenges will make up each stage. Competitors will need to be able to drive and navigate off-road, think fast while keeping their cool in tough situations, and be physically fit enough to “traverse canyons and cross rivers.”

In Africa, competitors will be hosted by Defender conservation partner Tusk. As part of the event, which will be filmed for the DEFENDER YouTube channel, competitors will also “[complete] a unique Tusk conservation mission.”

Defender 110 Trophy Edition

During these competitions, the vehicles being used will be special Trophy Edition Defender 110s. They will be in either Deep Sandglow Yellow or Keswick Green and feature a Gloss Black hood, lower bodyside, brake calipers, and rear recovery eyes. They will also have Gloss Black 20-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires.

Of course, they will also be fully logoed up. The Trophy graphic will be prominently displayed on the hood, C-pillar, and rear of the truck. Inside, you’ll be greeted by Trophy illuminated treadplates and Ebony Windsor leather seats. The Cross Car Beam inside is color-matched to the exterior paint color and has laser‑etched endcaps with Trophy logos.

The accessory parts catalog has also been thrown at these Trophy Edition Defenders. These parts include the Expedition Roof Rack, Deployable Roof Ladder, Side-Mounted Gear Carrier, a Raised Air Intake, and Front and Rear Classic Mud Flaps.

Get In on the Action: 2026 Defender Trophy

More in line with the Camel Trophy and early TReK events, the 2026 Defender Trophy does not require the purchase of anything, but instead is entered through an application process and selection event. The Trophy events of the past few years in the U.S. have all required the purchase of limited-edition Land Rover Defender Trophy models.

As a three-time Land Rover TReK (media wave) winner, Land Rover enthusiast, and someone who enjoys type-two fun in far-off lands, I of course applied, and you should too.

There are up to 44 Canadian and 190 American entry slots up for grabs for the North American Trophy Competition in Canada. Only two Canadians and two Americans will move on to the Global Trophy Competition in Africa.

Eligibility

Eligibility for the Defender Trophy competition is relatively basic, but also specific. You need to be over 23 years old, speak fluent English, have a valid driver’s license with at least 3 years of driving experience without any recent offenses, and have a valid passport. Also, you must be able to swim a minimum of 50 m unassisted and unaided.

You also must be a resident of one of the 50 participating countries in the competition — both Canada and the U.S. are participating.

“An unstoppable spirit” is also said to be essential.

Application Process

The application process is pretty simple. Go to the online application, fill out your personal details, and answer some questions. The answers to the questions will be scored on Defender brand fit and the likelihood of success at the competition.

The final step is to upload a 1-minute (or shorter) video. It can be shot with any recording device, but needs to be in landscape orientation. The video is just of you explaining to the camera how you embrace your impossible and why you should be selected.

Each entry will be individually judged and scored. The questionnaire answers will account for 25% of the total score, while the video will account for the remaining 75%.

Get your application in before Nov. 30, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. EST. Winning entrants will be notified by February 28, 2026.

Lacey Kelly hails from the real Florida — gators and Spanish moss and really-good-fishing kind of Florida. The part of Florida where trucks with DECKED CargoGlides and Drawer Systems outnumber stretch limos five to one.

Lacey’s Southern to her core, but she ironically hails from Yankeetown, on the Gulf Coast.
