Gear Junkie Editorial Director Sean McCoy spent ten days elk hunting in the White Duck Regatta Bell Tent ($950 for the six-man, $590 for the four man) and found it provided one of the most comfortable setups out there. Sure, you can be hardcore and sleep under a tarp, but why would you if you don’t have to?

This wall tent is heavy-duty, with stakes nearly as thick as rebar, and an 8.5-ounce duck cotton canvas. The canvas has a water, mold, and UV-resistant finish. Even after a long night of rain, there was no moisture inside. That includes condensation, which is very impressive.

The tent is pitched using two metal poles, one in the center and one above the door, and numerous guylines to hold the tent out and keep it secured. By adding on the optional awning ($280) the crew of hunters was able to stay organized by keeping piles of equipment outside. It also makes for a solid camp kitchen.

While the awning was a great add-on, it did present the only issue McCoy experienced with the tent. One night the crew experienced very high winds. When they stepped outside in the morning, they were met with the awning flung across the campsite. On the plus side, the tent stood strong.

While not the absolute lightest option, the Stone Glacier Skyscraper 2P ($710) provides extremely durable shelter for the backcountry in a reasonably lightweight package. It’s entirely 4-season capable, having weathered serious winter storms in testing, yet weighs just four pounds, six ounces.

But that doesn’t tell the full story. The Skyscraper is a very unique tent with amazing versatility. You can pitch it as a standard hiking tent with the entire body (with attached floor) and rainfly. Or, if you’re expecting decent weather and no bugs, you can pitch it with just the poles, tub footprint, and rain fly. That style of setup does require trekking poles, but even so, it’s a really nice bonus that gives you essentially two tents in one.

GearJunkie editor Sean McCoy used the tent mostly as a full system with tent body, rain fly, pole truss, and poles. This results in a super strong tent that withheld more than a foot of snow during a late October storm in Colorado. The tent managed the snow load and wind of the storm with no issues at all.

For two people, it is snug but manageable. Two vestibules and doors allow enough room to store essential hunting gear in a protected area. Plentiful pockets help keep smaller items organized in a crowded tent.

While the tent does not have a lot of mesh, it does have one through-vent on the wall, which allows for decent ventilation in colder weather when you want to keep doors closed.

This tent thrives in cool to cold conditions. In hot weather, it will suffer slightly due to its minimal mesh ventilation. But for the cool to cold conditions of most hunting seasons, it’s ideal.

For many, a late-season backcountry hunt is cool in concept, but is logistically too complicated to bother with. Shelter is one of the biggest hang-ups, because you need a warm, dry place to stay that you can carry on your back. That’s where the KUIU Storm Star 2-person tent ($599) comes in. At a relatively light 5 lbs., 5.2 oz., it offers stormproof performance capable of handling rain, snow, or anything else Mother Nature throws at it.

The rainfly and tent are clipped together, effectively making them operate as one piece. While setting it up, Hunt/Fish Editor Rachelle Schrute noted that it allows the entire tent to be sealed during setup, regardless of the weather. If you find yourself in a downpour, the interior will be dry when you climb in. They can also be separated, giving you the option to go more lightweight with a rainfly only set up in the warmer months.

Schrute found the layout to be excellent, with double doors on each side of the tent and vestibules that are great for gear storage. All four corners have storage pockets, and the roof storage loft is perfect for attaching lighting.

The only downside of the tent is that the setup can be a bit challenging. Even though all of the poles attach to the exterior of the tent with white gridded strips to guide you, it’s not as intuitive as you would think. However, after one setup, it becomes much easier. But, as a true four season tent, the fabric does pull very tight, and it’ll take a little bit of muscle to get it pitched.

But once it’s pitched, its awesome. The comfort and protection it offers during late season hunts can’t be beat.

Hunt/Fish Editor Rachelle Schrute stuck one on her rig and found it to provide the perfect truck basecamp.

The tent weighs in at 140 pounds, which allows for quick, easy installation. On top of that, it packs down tiny into a seriously low profile of 8 inches, which is a huge advantage in terms of fuel economy. Schrute found that she could put her bedding in the tent with the included mattress and still get it closed properly. That saves you even more space in your truck bed.

A hydraulic system does all of the work when it comes time to set up, and all you have to do is swing the U-bar out to secure it. In under two minutes, you can be all set up.

The tent is rated for two people, but Schrute says that the open layout makes it “two-plus-people capable.” If the standard version isn’t large enough, you can spring for the XL version, with an additional five inches of legroom, ten inches of width, and two extra inches of height.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Hunting Tent

Selecting the perfect hunting tent for your style of hunting can be tough. What works best for an early-season backcountry archery hunt certainly won’t be the best bet for a late-season deer hunt with a group of friends.

There are pros and cons to every tent out there, and this section is here to help you make the most informed decision possible.

Types of Tents

For regular fair-weather camping enthusiasts, a tent is a tent. Sure, there are differences in size and packability, but for the most part it’s pretty easy to select a perfect tent for fun, summertime outings.

Hunting is a different story, though. Fall and winter conditions demand more from a tent. Sometimes you’ll be backpacking in, with a plan to hike out with a pack full of meat. Other times, you’ll be crashing by the truck in frigid November temperatures. There is a litany of types of tents for hunters, and you’ll need to narrow down your options based on the hunting you do.

Backcountry Tents and Standard Tents

These are the tents you think of in the traditional sense of the word tent. A standard tent is a solid do it all option, providing good protection from the elements, and smaller options like the Kelty Discovery Trail offer a decent solution for backpack hunters. Larger options are great for car campers who want a little extra space.

Sounds sweet, right? You probably really want one. Well, Tipi brands are aware of this, and they’re priced accordingly.

Additionally, Tipis don’t offer as much room as a wall tent, and you and your buddies won’t all be standing up inside. They’re also not as lightweight as true backcountry options, and are a bit heavy for the solo backcountry hunter. But, if you want a do-all tent that will keep you warm no matter the weather, it’s the way to go.

Choosing Between Floored and Floorless Tents

One of the most significant differences between all of the tents listed above is that some of them have floors, and some don’t. Many have the option to add on a floor.  While it may not seem like much, there are some considerable pros and cons of each route. To have a floor or not? That is the question we will explore.

Floored Tents

Floored tents are completely enclosed tents with some type of floor that separates you and your gear from the elements. These are the most popular style of tent used for hunting and just outdoor recreation in general.

Pros

The biggest benefit to having a floor in your tent is keeping what’s outside, well … outside. And more particularly, I’m talking about the creepy-crawlies. When there is a floor, you don’t have to deal with the possibility of a mouse or spider scurrying across your face.

Not having to deal with those little buggers is not only less of a hassle overall, but it leads to better sleep. Our tents need to be the place where we reset and recharge. It’s hard to do that with a pesky critter keeping you up.

Along with that, a floor gives a person a dry place to set things down in the tent. Things like extra clothing, electronics, etc. That luxury doens’t exist in a floorless tent when rain and snow are present.

Cons

While having a floor is nice and all, it isn’t all peaches and cream. For one, having a floor often eliminates the ability to utilize a wood-burning stove. The floor can be a fire hazard, and while wood-burning stoves provide a nice warm and fuzzy feeling, the possibility of your “home” going up in flames while you sleep is a different game.

Another downside of a floor is that whatever you bring into the tent on your boots generally stays in the tent. Be it rocks, sticks, mud, etc. — it makes for a mess if you’re not conscious of your footwear. And if you’ve got wet clothes, guess what? Yeah, that water is coming inside with you.

Lastly, this is more for backpack hunting, but a floor is more weight. There is a reason that quite a few backpack hunters prefer a floorless shelter, and this is one of the big ones. Less weight in the pack means less stress on your body.

Floorless Tents

Floored tents might be the most common tent used throughout the outdoor/hunting community, but floorless tents have been at this game for much longer. Be it Native American tipi-style shelters or just the classic lean-to shelter made out of logs and sticks, floorless tents are the original hunting tents.

Pros

There is way more living area in these floorless tents than tents with a floor have, especially when taking the weight into consideration. Two-person floorless tents seem to actually be two-person tents. With a floored tent, a two-person tent really means one person, comfortably. It’s a tight squeeze for anything more.

Believe it or not, sleeping in the dirt within the walls of a floorless tent is also less messy. There isn’t a tent floor to get dirty, and the ground is simply the ground. Fewer worries about mold, mildew, and just general filth: no post-hunt hose-off required. 

Floorless tents offer yet another convenience, and that is being able to cook inside your tent. (Be bear aware!). Whether on a wood-burning stove or just a backpacking stove, there is no floor creating a fire hazard. So, when the alarm sounds in the morning, just roll over, fire up the stove, and get the coffee going.

(We don’t recommend cooking inside your tent in high-density bear areas. Eat away from your tent and keep your food in a secure place, whether that’s in a tree or in your vehicle.)

Cons

When we take away the floor, we open up the door to potential visitors. Things like mice, spiders, and whatever else is lurking about can freely move right into your humble abode. When temperatures drop, this doesn’t seem to be as big of an issue.

If you’ve done a little window shopping, you may have noticed that floorless tents are more expensive than tents with floors. So, there aren’t as many budget options to get into the floorless game as there are in the floored one. This limits folks from living the floorless life altogether.

Floorless tents usually have a way bigger footprint than floored tents. There are floored tents the size of a deer bed, meaning finding a spot to set one up is much easier. Floorless tents, however, require some more real estate. In really steep country, this could pose a problem.

Price and Value

Collectively, our team has slept in everything from a cheap twenty-dollar tent from Walmart to some of the most expensive temporary structures available. You can get by with just about anything, but there are definite improvements to be found in different price points.

Budget

Budget tents range in price from $20-$120, and there are significant differences within that price range. With a budget tent, you’re going to be limited to non-stove compatible, standard tents.

The cheapest tents may claim waterproofness, but generally are not and often suffer from condensation problems inside. They’re also going to be heavier than a more expensive option with the same footprint. Those ultra-cheap tents won’t stand up to the test of time, and you may find yourself with broken poles or torn fabric in short order.

Some of the best budget tents, like the Kelty Discovery Trail, while in the upper tier of budget tents, will keep out the elements and be very durable. While heavier than more expensive tents, it’s still lightweight enough for a backpack hunt.

Mid Tier

Frequently Asked Questions

Getting an opportunity at a good deer requires a lot of time in the woods. Sometimes it’s not about how far you can go, but how long you can stay in the tree. It doesn’t matter how light your treestand or saddle is; if it’s not comfortable, you’ll dream up every reason to call it quits early.

I’ve had the privilege of testing a ton of saddles. Most of them are comfortable, but the Latitude Outdoors Method 3 tops them all in that regard. No, it’s not the lightest saddle out there, but it’s definitely the most comfortable. If that comfort keeps you on stand longer, then I’d say it earns every ounce of its weight.

Testing the Latitude Method 3

I’ve put the Latitude Method 3 through the rigors of the deer woods this season, including a few all-day rut sits on an out-of-state hunting trip. I immediately added two Operator pouches to the saddle (one regular and one XL), an upgrade worth every penny. While hunting, I noted how the saddle transported to and from sits, if there were any hotspots or pressure points, and how it handled after long hours in the tree.

A lot of hunting saddles tend to loosen in the leg straps while you hike into a spot. I really appreciated how the Method 3 stayed snug, so I didn’t have to stop and keep adjusting them.

The same goes for the rope belt. I’ve been skeptical about Latitude’s rope belt in the past, but after using the Method 3 extensively, I’m a fan. It adjusts quickly and stays snug, and I didn’t have to worry about it falling down, even with fully loaded Operator pouches.

The drawstrings for the panel adjustments also stayed in place and helped keep both panels together, along with the robust magnets. I never felt like the saddle would come apart on the walk in or hanging in the tree.

The drawstrings also double as stick holders. The Method 3 only has a single row of MOLLE loops, so the built-in holders are a fantastic touch and a great representation of this saddle’s economical design.

Serious Stability

Because there’s so much adjustability in this saddle, you have to be really stubborn to sit in a position that creates any hip pinch. The adjustable bridge and two-panel design give you a ton of setup possibilities in the tree.

During a couple of dark-to-dark sits, I ran through various panel positions, which made it easy to stay comfortable all day on stand. One of the best things about the strong magnetic connection is that you have the ability to run this saddle as a true single or double panel.

For hunters considering Method 3, I would highly suggest adding a few operator pouches. These silent, roomy pouches have plenty of room to hold your lineman’s rope, tether, bow hanger, tow rope, headlamp, and whatever else you need to quickly and conveniently access. That extra room in the pouches means you don’t have to worry about taking a pack for quick hang and hunts or when you need to travel light.

What the Latitude Method 3 Does Best

Aside from its reasonable price, the Method 3 is definitely the most comfortable saddle I’ve used. Mesh padding and ample adjustability in the bridge and panel positions allow hunters to tailor this saddle to their specific fit. Whether you’re upgrading your current rig or just getting into saddle hunting, the Method 3 works for new or seasoned saddle hunters.

Where the Latitude Method 3 Can Improve

All the comfort and padding come with a cost. The Method 3 won’t be mistaken for lightweight, but it still shouldn’t be considered heavy. That padding doesn’t promote the best breathability either. During some warm, early-season hunts, I definitely got warm walking into some spots. Luckily, that part of the season doesn’t last long, and the tradeoff means it’ll help keep your can warm when the temps drop.

Final Thoughts on the Latitude Method 3

Latitude’s Method 3 does something most companies claim but fail to do: make actual improvements on its predecessor. The Method 3 isn’t just another marketing ploy to push a new product in a new year. It boasts intuitive features that saddle hunters should appreciate while providing ample comfort in the tree.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers are investigating the illegal killing of four bull elk in Las Animas County. The bulls were discovered on four separate ranch properties near the Stonewall and Picketwire areas. The incidents occurred on September 13, 26, and 27, and officers believe they may be connected based on the timing and locations.

Officers report that each bull was found in a different condition. One was shot and left intact. One survived long enough for officers to locate it, although it had to be put down due to the injury. Another bull had only the backstraps removed. The final bull was found with the head removed and no meat taken. CPW considers all four cases to be examples of waste and illegal take.

“These were senseless and disgraceful acts not only to the sportspersons community, but they also took valuable resources away from every Coloradoan, demonstrating a complete disregard for Colorado wildlife,” said Jim Hawkins, CPW Assistant Chief of Law Enforcement and Operation Game Thief coordinator. 

Investigation Ongoing

Poaching investigations rely heavily on public reporting because large, rural landscapes and private land access can limit direct observation. Officers are asking anyone who heard gunshots, spotted suspicious activity, or noticed unfamiliar vehicles on those dates to share that information.

Colorado law treats many big game poaching cases as felonies. Penalties for illegally killing and wasting elk may include fines, jail time, and long-term loss of hunting privileges. Officers have not released any information about the suspect at this time.

Reward for Information

The reward for information that leads to a citation or arrest now totals $4,000. Officers hope the increased reward will help generate new leads in an area where access, elevation, and private land boundaries can complicate investigations.

Outside of a bow or firearm, many will tell you that a set of binoculars is the most essential piece of equipment in a hunter’s kit. I certainly fit in that group. Even if things are looking grim, when I lift binoculars to my face, I feel like I’m going to spot a giant or unlock a secret to success. My binoculars are my safety blanket. They keep me going.

So, when the opportunity to test the Maven M.2 Monocular was presented to me, I was conflicted. On the one hand, I’ve always thought monoculars are a gimmick. If they were so great, why don’t you see any hunters using them in the field? It seemed like something a crossbow hunter would use. Derive what you will from that statement.

But on the other hand, I’m responsible for keeping up with the latest and greatest for our “Best Binoculars” buyer’s guide, which also covers monoculars. I had a professional obligation to do it.

Because of that, the M.2 ended up on my doorstep, and one day, I left the bino harness at home. It was embarrassingly difficult to do. But after a few hunts, I got over it, and now I’m questioning if binoculars are as crucial as I thought.

In short: If you’re looking for a new hunting optic, I’m going to make a case that it shouldn’t be a set of binoculars. Is the Maven M.2 monocular for everyone? Absolutely not. However, for specific situations, it’s everything you could ever need in a more portable package, making it the superior choice. Additionally, you can get incredibly high-quality glass at half the price, since it’s essentially half a pair of binoculars.

Build of the Maven M.2 12X50 Monocular

The M.2 is a natural extension of Mavens’ lineup. In simple terms, the brand took its highest-end binocular, the B.6, and chopped it in half. If you don’t love the 10X50 size, Maven did the same thing with its flagship 10X42 B1.2 binocular to create the M.1 10X42 monocular.

When you first pick this thing up, the quality is apparent. The magnesium construction provides a metallic, durable feel. At 1 pound and 4 ounces, the M.2 is hefty, despite its compact size. A lot of that heft comes from its larger 50mm objective lens, so while it is heavy for a monocular, it’s a necessary tradeoff for the low-light performance the lens gives you. Plus, it’s way lighter than a 12X50 pair of binoculars.

The optic has an IPX7 rating and can be submerged in 1 m of water for half an hour. That’s more than enough protection from dust and moisture you’ll encounter in the field. So far, I have had zero durability issues.

The components are Japanese, but the entire thing is constructed in the U.S.. Toss in high-quality oil- and scratch-resistant ED glass, along with a dielectric-coated prism, and you have a recipe for a sweet monocular. And appeal? This thing has it. I absolutely love the look of Maven’s products. The orange and silver color, in particular, provides an exceptionally eye-catching look.

My First Experience With the Maven M.2 12X50 Monocular

It was on a whitetail hunt that I first ditched my binoculars. The only reason I was able to muster the courage to do it was that I began to critically evaluate my gear setup.

I realized I hadn’t used my binoculars all that much while hunting in the big woods. Aside from squirrel and bird watching out of boredom, I would use them to glass small fields on the property from the truck, or when identifying the sex of deer that I spotted in thick cover with my naked eye.

And the binocular harness I had been carting around was flat-out clunky when climbing the tree to get set up in my saddle. The straps would annoyingly catch on climbing sticks, and it added an extra step any time I needed to add or remove a jacket. Obnoxious.

So I made the call and threw the Maven M.2 in my pocket. It fit perfectly. When I embarked from the truck into the woods, I felt naked. Not in a good way.

But that stopped at the tree stand. It turned into a freeing feeling. I was able to successfully glass every single thing I needed to, with a quick reach into my pocket: no extra bulk, no annoying harness. The portability in the field is fantastic. I cannot emphasize enough how nice it is to fit my only optic in a jacket pocket.

Optical Performance

The optical performance of the Maven M.2 is excellent, but not perfect. I break optical performance into two categories: clarity and low-light performance.

Clarity

When you look through the monocular, it appears pristine, and the image quality is fantastic. It’s sharper than most optics I own. On the face of it, some would call it perfect. However, it’s my job to assess beyond what’s immediately noticeable.

On the very extreme edges of the image, there are some flaws. To pick up these flaws, I had to hold the monocular steady and move my eye itself to look at the edges — picture trying to roll your eyes up to the back of your head. It’s a very unnatural thing to do, and if you don’t do that, you may not even notice the following “complaints.”

When looking at fall leaves in bright sunlight, there is some chromatic aberration. Additionally, the extreme edges are slightly distorted. Now, both of those things could be attributed to the 12X zoom. A higher-powered optic inherently makes image flaws more noticeable, all else being equal.

Overall, it is excellent glass and better than most. As I said, when you pick it up and first look through it, the sharpness will impress you. You’ll only find something to complain about if you look for it.

Low-Light Performance

I was interested in seeing how the Maven M.2 would perform in low light, given its 50mm objective lens. However, it is a monocular, so it has one less lens to gather light. I compared it to my ZEISS SFL 10X50 binoculars and the Vortex Diamondback HD 10X42 to see just how bright an image the single large lens could crank out. I tested them in the field and then in a controlled environment at home, looking down a dark hallway.

The hallway test provided the most striking results. The M.2 can’t touch the SFL in low light. The SFLs were easily putting out a brighter image.

It wasn’t as straightforward as the 10X42 Vortex. However, the Maven M.2 monocular had a very slight edge — enough of an edge that I noticed, though.

Overall, I’m impressed with that performance, considering the single-tube design. If you’re worried about glassing around sunrise and sunset, the M.2 is more capable than some binoculars.

Other Strengths of the Maven M.2 12X50

Stability

I was most concerned about image stability when I agreed to test the M.2. 12X is a lot of zoom, and it can be tough to maintain a steady image at such a high power.

However, shockingly, I don’t really notice shakiness when using it. There isn’t any internal electronic stabilization, so I don’t know how that’s possible. But if shakiness is something you’re concerned about, don’t be. Color me surprised.

Smooth Focus Wheel

The focus wheel is the perfect blend of smooth and stiff. It’s stiff enough that it’s impossible to accidentally move, which is great, because it’s best used with two hands, and one is almost always in contact with the wheel.

When you go to turn it, though, it’s buttery smooth. It’s easy to fine focus, and it is anything but stiff or grabby when you intentionally move it.

Four-Position Eye Cup

Rather than the traditional two positions available for the eyecup, Maven provided four. When you first look through the monocular, it can be tough to get it lined up perfectly, but the additional eye cup positions help. The outermost position works best for me, but having additional positions will allow any face shape to get it dialed in.

High Value

When the Maven M.2 was released, many people online thought the price of $500 was ridiculous. And, in the world of monoculars, it does seem steep.

But, very few of the cheaper monoculars have anywhere near the capabilities of the M.2. A 12X50 is inherently going to be more expensive. Additionally, none of the cheaper monoculars offer the same level of optical performance.

And on that note, the M.2 is a great deal in regard to optical performance. It’s the same glass and features found in the most premium binoculars in Maven’s lineup, but at half the price. If you want to experience what high-end glass is all about, this may be the cheapest way to do it. It’s half the tubes, so your money goes twice as far.

The Inevitable Drawbacks

Switching to a monocular hasn’t been all good. There are some tradeoffs you make by going to a single tube, and they can potentially be a deal-breaker.

Downside of a Monocular

I’ve only found one downside to moving to a monocular, but for some situations, it’s a really big negative. Eye fatigue sets in much quicker. I’ve glassed with the Maven M.2 next to the ZEISS 10X50 binoculars, and while 10 minutes of straight glassing with the binoculars was no problem, the same time behind the monocular caused noticeable strain.

There’s nothing Maven can do about that. It’s the nature of squinting one eye closed and focusing with the other. That’s it, though. Outside of long glassing sessions, I love the reduction in bulk and am starting to prefer the monocular in many situations.

Negatives That Can Be Fixed by Going to the Smaller M.1 Monocular

A 12X optic is on the upper end of what I would recommend for non-image-stabilized optics. If you’re a shaky person, it may be too much for you to freehand, although most people have a steady enough hand to use it.

Optical power is all about tradeoffs, though. I absolutely love the 12X zoom when “blind searching” thick cover for bedded animals. It gives me a much closer view of what I’m looking at, and a few times, I’ve caught an ear flick or been able to distinguish an antler tine from a stick that I might not have been able to with a lower-powered optic. It could also be a huge benefit when Western hunting, and using the extra power to estimate antler size more accurately is a plus.

However, it does make acquiring a target I’ve identified with my naked eye fairly difficult. For example, last week I thought I saw a few deer legs in some new growth pine. I pulled up the M.2 to verify, but it took me a few tries to locate what I was looking for. It’s noticeable.

That’s because the field of view is more limited. If you’re glassing large swaths of open country, though, it won’t be as apparent. But it is a reality of going with a higher-powered optic. Lastly, the M.2 is heavy for a monocular. That’s due to its large objective lens and impressive zoom capability.

If you think that the 12X is too much, grab the M.1 monocular, which is the same thing from a quality and build standpoint in a 10X42. It solves all of those problems. Personally, I prefer the extra power.

Where Maven Completely Missed With the M.2 Monocular

There is one complaint I have, which, to me, is a complete miss by Maven. The M.2 Monocular is not tripod compatible.

It is ridiculous to manufacture a higher-powered optic, like a 12X, without the ability to mount it on a steadying tripod. Yes, I said the stability when free-handing was shockingly good, but come on. Making it tripod mountable would turn this thing into a sweet “micro-spotting scope” of sorts.

Who Should Ditch Binos for the Maven M.2 Monocular

Whitetail Tree Stand Hunters: It’s time to be real with yourself, Whitetail nerds. You don’t use your binoculars that much, especially if you hunt the big woods. I have thoroughly enjoyed the move to a pocket optic in the tree stand. It does everything I need; the streamlined, compact design is ideal for the tight quarters in the stand or blind.

If you’re pre-season scouting from afar in farm country, binos would be better, and a spotting scope would be best. But when it’s time to get in the tree, the M.2 is perfect.

Anyone Shopping for “Truck Binoculars”: Most hunters I know have a set of binoculars that live in their truck. The M.2 is the quintessential “truck bino.” You can lock it up in a glove box, and when you’re driving around the woods, it sits perfectly in a cup holder. Since you’re not using it for long glassing sessions, the eye strain negative is a moot point.

Waterfowlers: For me, waterfowl scouting involves driving around in a boat or truck, locating birds in the sky, and then trying to pinpoint where they land. Optics come in handy for that last part. It also helps with bird identification, viewing birds on the water, or looking at potential blind locations from afar.

But again, that’s not all that glass-heavy of an activity. The compact monocular has won out for me when scouting for ducks.

Who Shouldn’t Make the Switch

Western Big Game Hunters: Spot and stalk hunters should take a hard pass on this one. The eye strain will be too much for long glassing sessions. The lack of tripod compatibility also makes this optic a no-go. Stick with the binoculars, for sure.

Unless …

You’re an extreme backcountry elk hunter: I’m talking the guys who go in deep for a week at minimum. In that instance, weight becomes very important.

In my experience, optics aren’t as critical while elk hunting as they are deer hunting. Elk are huge, and if they’re on a distant mountainside, chances are you’re going to see them with the naked eye. Pull up the M.2, identify if it’s a target bull or not, and be on your way. I’m not saying every backcountry elk hunter should do it, just that you should consider it.

Or you live in a heavily timbered part of the West: I was raised in the pine-covered mountains of the Idaho panhandle. You cannot see through the canopy, and optics are useless 85% of the time. On a deer hunt with my brother north of Coeur d’Alene, I may have used my binoculars a total of a dozen times in a week. I senselessly packed around a bulky harness and full binos. The M.2 would have sufficed for the light glassing we were doing.

Final Thoughts on the Maven M.2 Monocular

A monocular is a specialized piece of equipment for sure, and I know I’m going out on a limb recommending you move away from binoculars, the widely accepted hunting optic standard. But live a little. Think outside the box. Break the rules.

The Maven M.2 Monocular is excellent. It gives you top-of-the-line optical clarity at one of the lowest prices you can find, and will make you a more streamlined, efficient hunter in the right situations. After testing it, I’ve found myself leaving the binocular harness at home more and more.

Technology is an ever-moving force, and the hunting industry has not been exempt from that force in the least. Rangefinding binoculars are by no means new on the scene, but I am confident in saying they are not the norm for most hunters.

Vortex Ranger HD 3000 Rangefinding Binocular Review

Overview

Vortex Optics is no stranger to the rangefinding binocular world. The Fury line of binos was a hit for many hunters, but Vortex has never been one to stand still and call things good. In the name of progression, they released the Ranger HD 3000 in 10×42. It’s a notch down in bulk and a notch up in affordability.

The Ranger HD 3000 is a 10×42 rangefinding binocular that is 6.7″ long and weighs in at 32.4 ounces. Inside the box of every set of binoculars, you’ll find a glasspak harness, neck strap, CR123A battery, lens cloth, and eye cups. Beneath the right eye cup, there is a reticle focus knob, and beneath the left eye cup, there is a diopter focus knob.

Internally, hunters will have the option to control reticle brightness as well as the choice between ranges in yards and meters. The top of the optic has two buttons being Measure and Menu. Hunters can expect to get ranges up to 3,000 yards on reflective targets, 1,800 yards on things like trees, and 1,500 yards on animals.

Features

Slimmed-Down Profile

A notable feature of the Ranger HD 3000 is its slim profile. Other RF binos, including the Fury line, tend to be a bit bulky. You can tell that they are a rangefinding binocular. With the Ranger HD 3000, the Ranger looks and feels like a regular binocular. In fact, the only ways you’re going to tell it has an RF inside are the buttons on top and the hidden battery port on the underside of the optic.

3 Ranging Modes (LOS, HCD, SCAN)

The Ranger HD 3000 has three ranging modes to meet your needs as a hunter. They are LOS, HCD, and SCAN. LOS is the line-of-sight mode. This will give you a true-blue line of sight range from you to the target, regardless of angle.

HCD, on the other hand, is the Horizontal Component Distance mode, which is basically the angle-compensating mode. HCD will automatically cut yardage in relation to whatever angle you’re shooting at to ensure you make the best shot possible.

Lastly, SCAN mode is exactly what it sounds like. You can essentially scan your reticle across the landscape, and it’ll give you continuous readouts of ranges as they change. A valuable tool for confirming range on a standalone animal or one that is moving.

Target Modes (First, Last)

Vortex Optics also equipped the Ranger HD 3000 with two target modes being First and Last. These can come in handy when ranging an animal surrounded by trees, brush, etc. First mode will take the range of the first thing the reticle hits. An example would be a deer standing in front of a group of trees.

Last mode does the opposite. It takes the last target in a scene and gives that range. An example is a deer standing beyond a group of trees or when ranging a deer through the tall grass. Two great tools to use in order to avoid accidentally ranging the wrong thing, like a limb. We’ve all been there.

My Experience

There is something to be said about being able to watch an animal through your binoculars and not having to skip a beat to reach for your rangefinder. Right there on the spot, a hunter can gather range data and either get behind their weapon or stay on the glass to spot for their hunting partner about to shoot. It’s awesome, but I’ve honestly never been a fan.

Let me explain. I’ve always been a fan of the idea. I’ve just never been a fan of the actual products available to do it. They’ve always been bulky and never felt great in my hand. And the ones that were closer to what I’d prefer were always mega-expensive. Like used-car expensive. I’ve gotta say, my mind has shifted a bit since playing with the Ranger HD 3000.

Immediately upon taking the Rangers out of the box, my eyebrows lifted in response to how slimmed down they were. Minus the buttons, these looked and felt just like a regular pair of binoculars. Feel is one thing, but how the glass performed was another. These are binoculars after all.

Knowing these were a notch down in glass quality from the Fury, I was a little skeptical, if I’m being honest. Once I looked through them, though, I was pleasantly surprised. Are these the same quality as my Razor UHDs? No, but they are far from a low-grade image. I found them to be clear, easy to look through, and easy to adjust to my eyes.

As for the rangefinder, the button is very easy to both press and find on the optic without looking. And when you do request a range from the Ranger HD, it delivers it fast. I got confirmed ranges out past 1,100 yards with ease while on an antelope hunt. On that note, that hunt had rain and a wide range of temperature fluctuation. The Ranger never ceased to work properly, and I also never felt like the glass didn’t feel good to look through.

What’s Wrong

At the end of the day, this is about as stripped-down a rangefinding binocular as you’re going to get. While some, like myself, might see this as a good thing, it’s also a downside. You’re not going to find any fancy features like internal ballistic solutions, multiple potential rifle profiles, etc. It is a rangefinding binocular, and that’s about it for about $800.

Final Thoughts

As I said earlier, I’ve never been a fan of rangefinding binoculars. To be completely transparent, though, this new Ranger HD 3000 has me reconsidering. It’s the right size, does what I need it to, and is the right price to reach the masses.

Who knows, maybe after more field time, I’ll become an RF bino guy. Until then, I’m going to keep putting the Ranger HD 3000 through the paces. Sure, it might not have a bunch of juicy features, but sometimes simpler is better.

Field & Stream has been around for over 100 years, and now it’s entering the 21st century. The media company announced that it’s partnering with Outdoor America to launch a 24/7 television network.

The move is the latest part of Field & Stream’s growth strategy since it relaunched in 2024, with the help of big-name investors like Eric Church and Morgan Wallen.

The Partnership

Outdoor America is a streaming platform aimed at hunters and anglers. Its current programming slate includes shows like Pure Hunting, Big Buck Blueprint, and Beyond the Grid. It’s available online, through broadcast TV, and via FAST TV.

Field & Stream, which has been around since 1871, started as a print publication, and has grown through its podcasts, website, and social media.

“The Field & Stream name represents the gold standard of authenticity in the outdoors,” Nick Rhodes, CEO of Outdoor America, said in a press release. “Together we’re building a world-class outdoor lifestyle network with premium programming, dynamic partnerships and a global vision.”

The Channel

The companies have not yet announced a lineup of shows, but they’ve hinted at the type of content that will be available. According to a press release, “Field & Stream TV will bridge the worlds of outdoor pursuits and authentic American culture.”

The brand plans to work with outdoor influencers, sports figures, and musicians like Church and Wallen to produce shows. Field & Stream will release more information about the line-up at the SHOT Show in January 2026.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the Outdoor America team to launch Field & Stream TV with a powerful and immediate distribution footprint,” Doug McNamee, President of Field & Stream, said.

“This partnership allows us to tell more stories that celebrate life outdoors — through new, exclusive programming and an unmatched ability to reach audiences and sponsors across every channel. It’s a defining step in Field & Stream’s continued evolution.”

The sharp blaring of my iPhone alarm snapped me awake at 4:45 a.m. I reached my hand out of the sleeping bag to shut the dang thing off, and quickly realized that the next few minutes were not going to be fun. It was easily below 15 degrees, and my hand was stinging within a few short seconds of being out of my toasty, sub-zero-rated cocoon.

But, there was hunting to be done. Ducks to kill. Upland prairies to walk.

I took a deep breath, braced myself, and threw open the sleeping bag. The first thing I reached for was the Kings Camo XKG Pinnacle Jacket. I bundled layers over it, and headed out of the tent for an extended sit in the duck blind. With the shocking cold, I was wide awake. No coffee needed.

The rest of that day was jam-packed. The crew I was with chased ducks and geese in the morning, and then stopped by the wall tent for brunch, before heading off to the prairie in search of roosters and Sharptail. And of course, storytelling and dinner in the heated main tent after dark.

It wasn’t until I was crawling back into my sleeping bag that I took off the Pinnacle Jacket. It’s that type of top. You’ll put it on and never feel the need to take it off.

In short: It’s now November, and the Kings Camo XKG Pinnacle Jacket has been on my body or in my pack on every single hunt this year. Whether I was chasing early-season whitetail in late September, hanging out in a bird camp in frigid Nebraska, or doing all-day sits during the rut, I’ve come to rely on it as an essential piece. It’s a near-flawless, versatile midlayer, with a price that’s tough to beat.

What Type of Jacket Is It?

The Kings Camo XKG line has been around for a few years, but it recently started gaining popularity. Kings as a whole has focused on budget-friendly gear. However, the XKG is its “high-end” line that’s more of a competitor with the big-name brands, like First Lite, SITKA, and KUIU. It’s still more budget-friendly than those options, though.

After using a few pieces, I can say that it’s quality gear that provides some of the best bang-for-the-buck on the market.

The Pinnacle jacket is the fleece midlayer top in the line. Think of it as a sweater-like jacket that’s the only insulation you’ll need on a September archery hunt, but can serve as the first layer over your base for those frosty December hunts.

If you’re looking for comparisons, it’s similar to the First Lite Origin Hoody ($170) and the SITKA Alpha Fleece Hooded Jacket ($219). The real beauty is that this one retails for $140 and is often on sale at the Kings website. As of this writing, it’s available for a crazy 85 bucks!

What Type of Hunts Is the XKG Pinnacle Jacket Best For?

I have a concise answer for this: all of them. When I first got this jacket, I packed it on my hunts for pure testing purposes for work. Now I pack it because it’s too stinkin’ versatile to leave at home.

On my early-season archery hunts, there was no reason to pack a full-on jacket for the mornings and evenings. The thin 400 GSM body mapping fleece in the body, and 320 GSM fleece in the sleeves of the Pinnacle, are all you need for insulation after the sun sets. And it packs up small and light.

On my Nebraska bird hunt, when I was sitting still in the freezing duck blind, the thin fleece was obviously nowhere near enough insulation to keep me warm. However, it was a critical layering piece, and I was happy to have the extra layer.

As the day heated up, I didn’t need all of the layers and slowly started peeling them off. By the time we got around to upland hunting, it was warm enough not to need a heavier jacket, but there was still a slight bite to the air in just a long-sleeve tee.

At the truck, I debated wearing a jacket or not. I knew if I wore one, I’d be comfortable now, but would probably regret that decision within a half mile of hiking.

I opted to leave the Pinnacle on. It was perfect for long hikes in the cold. It kept me relatively warm when I was stationary, and it breathed extremely well when I was sweating on mile 3 through the Sandhills. I never needed to stop and take it off.

It’s now the only layer I wear on high-output hunts. Whether you’re a Western hunter, whitetail nut, or an upland bird hunter, you’ll find a use for it.

My Favorite Features of the Kings Camo XKG Pinnacle Jacket

Outside of its use as a versatile layer for all seasons, there are some particular things I love about the Kings Camo XKG Pinnacle Jacket.

Hood and Collar

I don’t think I have ever loved a hood as much as the one found on this jacket. It’s hands down the shining star of the entire piece.

Unlike many midweight tops, Kings Camo put a full zip-up collar on this jacket. That allowed for the hood to be pushed back and offset from the front of the collar. The result is a completely unimpeded view in your peripheral vision.

It works perfectly. When I’m in the tree stand, I get zero fabric blocking any part of my view. If it weren’t for the warmth provided, I would forget that the hood is even on.

Because of that, I leave all of my other hoods off and use this one to keep my dome warm on cold November mornings. I’m confident I’m not missing a thing in the woods.

Plus, the full zip collar is flat-out nice to have for the extra warmth.

Full-Length Zipper

The Pinnacle has a full-length zipper down the front, which I like more than a pullover or anorak-style quarter zip hoody. It makes removing the jacket easier, and if I’m hanging in a tree stand and need to dump heat, I can just unzip it. It’s a lot better than fighting a jacket around a tether or harness.

Thumb Holes

Each arm has large thumbholes on the wrist. I personally never wear my jacket with my thumbs through the thumbholes, but it does come in handy when I start layering.

Using the thumbholes before throwing another jacket on prevents the sleeves from getting bunched up around my arm. That’s important for a midlayer piece that will often get covered up. Since this jacket is more budget-friendly, I could see justifying leaving minor details like that out, but Kings kept them. Delivering value, folks.

Stretchy Outer Material

The entire Pinnacle Jacket is constructed with synthetic materials, which I’ve come to prefer on this type of top. While the interior is made from fleece, the exterior is four-way stretch fabric. That allows for excellent maneuverability and a touch of durability.

I’ve worn similar tops made entirely out of merino, and they were great from a warmth standpoint. But the second I went through thick brush, they got ripped apart. I have one with six holes in it.

For a top that I wear as my outermost layer on active hunts, that doesn’t cut it. The synthetic material makes the Pinnacle Jacket more resistant to accidental tears. I went through some real thick pheasant cover in it. It’s no worse for wear. Is it as durable as a hard shell? No. But it’s better than most mid-weight tops.

Is There a Reason It’s Cheaper?

Another concise answer, albeit less clear: Kind of.

I have not personally worn the SITKA Alpha Fleece Hooded Jacket or the First Lite Origin Hoody I compared this to earlier, but they do have one leg up on the Pinnacle based on one spec alone: a DWR finish.

There is no water resistance built into the Kings Camo XKG Pinnacle jacket. Now, there are very few tops like this that do. The two above are notable exceptions. All the merino versions on the market will end up soaking wet. Additionally, those merino versions are also more expensive than the Pinnacle.

So on an industry-wide scale, it’s not a huge negative. I do not expect a midweight insulating layer to provide water resistance. If I expect rain, I pack a soft-shell jacket or a rain jacket. However, the one time I did get wet in it, the synthetic material still kept me warmer than I would have been without it.

And on that note, I have found the Pinnacle jacket to be quite slow-drying. After washing it, I left it to hang dry, but it still had a damp feel after 24 hours. But thanks to the Polygiene Odor Control, I hardly ever have to wash it. Really. I think I’ve washed it twice.

Final Thoughts on the Kings Camo XKG Pinnacle Jacket

I’m a gear snob, and am always quick with a rational argument (excuse?) to have the best, most expensive stuff out there. I own merino tops similar to the XKG Pinnacle Jacket that are more expensive. And I like this one more. I really love the hood.

After using it this season, I’ve seen the benefits of moving over to synthetic materials for this type of top — mainly, durability. Merino is great, but when it gets exposed to thick brush and cover, its charm starts to fade.

This is the perfect outermost layer when you’re hiking around, and it’s too cold to be in a T-shirt or base layer top alone. Upland hunting and Western big game rifle seasons come to mind. On both of those hunts, you’ll probably come into contact with brush, and the synthetic material will stand up better than most.

No, it doesn’t have a DWR finish like the most expensive options. But I genuinely do not care. Not once in my outdoor career have I gone into the field expecting a lightweight insulating top to provide any form of waterproofness. I expect it to breathe when I’m active, keep me warm as a solo layer in the early season, and act as an additional layer in the winter months.

The Pinnacle checks all of those boxes. If you’re looking for a midweight top, buy this one and save the cash for a fancy, impenetrable rain jacket or a puffy with a high warmth-to-weight ratio. This is one of those beautiful instances where the budget gear performs so well, I can’t recommend the more expensive stuff with a straight face.
